NUST Spearheads National Dialogue on Ethical and Inclusive Artificial Intelligence in Pakistan

This initiative aligns with Pakistan’s recently approved National AI Policy 2025, reinforcing NUST’s commitment to responsible AI development.

ISLAMABAD – The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) has taken a leading role in fostering the development of Ethical and Inclusive Artificial Intelligence (AI) within Pakistan. On August 19, 2025, NUST hosted a significant multistakeholder dialogue, aptly named “Ethical AI for All,” at its Deep Learning Lab (DLL) in Islamabad. The event was a collaborative effort with The Inclusion Lab and Digital Intellix 4PL, drawing a diverse group of attendees including policymakers, prominent industry leaders, innovators, and representatives from the United Nations.

The primary objective of the dialogue was to formulate comprehensive strategies aimed at eliminating inherent biases in AI systems, enhancing diversity in its application, and ensuring that the transformative benefits of AI are accessible to all segments of society. A particular focus was placed on extending these advantages to rural and marginalized communities across Pakistan.

Dr. Irtiza, Principal SINES, commenced the session with opening remarks that set a forward-looking tone for discussions on responsible AI development. Mr. Julian Gorman, Head of GSMA Asia Pacific, delivered a keynote address, emphasizing the critical and urgent need for robust digital infrastructure to transform inclusive AI from a concept into a tangible reality. Ms. Afke Bootsman, representing the United Nations, offered insights into global ethical AI frameworks, providing an international perspective on the subject. Complementing this, Mr. Michael Schulz, Advisor and Board Director at The Inclusion Lab, meticulously outlined nine crucial governance priorities essential for cultivating truly inclusive AI systems.

NUST’s commitment to AI innovation was highlighted by Dr. Faisal Shafait and Dr. Momina Moetesum, who showcased the university’s cutting-edge research and collaborative projects. Their presentations underscored NUST’s dedication to embedding ethical considerations and fairness principles directly into the core of AI solutions.

The dialogue also saw robust participation from major industry players, including Ericsson, Telenor, Ignite, Oracle, Mercurial Minds, and Khan Academy Pakistan. Their involvement underscored the vital importance of cross-sector collaboration in shaping the future of AI in Pakistan.
