NOAA Prepares for 7th AI Workshop, Focusing on Generative AI in Environmental Sciences

TLDR: The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is set to host its 7th AI Workshop from September 16-17, 2025, in Boulder, Colorado. This year’s event will focus on generative AI (GenAI) applications for Earth and space sciences, aiming to enhance environmental research and foster collaboration across various sectors.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is gearing up for its 7th AI Workshop, a significant event dedicated to integrating artificial intelligence into environmental information and research. The main hybrid workshop is scheduled for September 16-17, 2025, and will take place in Boulder, Colorado, at the National Science Foundation’s National Center for Atmospheric Research Center Green Campus, with virtual participation also available.

This year’s workshop series, hosted by NOAA’s Center for Artificial Intelligence, is specifically focusing on generative AI (GenAI) for environmental science applications. The overarching goal is to support and enhance the use of AI in environmental science, foster collaboration, and initiate the active development of AI-powered applications and community standards.

The workshop is structured as a series of events throughout 2025. Part 1, held virtually on March 3, focused on Generative Modeling for Earth and Space Sciences. Part 2, a virtual workshop on June 9, addressed Generative AI for Information Services. The series culminates with the two-day hybrid event in September, titled Generative AI for Earth and Space Science Applications.

Key themes for the September workshop include fire weather and impacts, AI in ocean conservation, and interoperable Digital Twin Earth. The event is designed to bring together a diverse group of participants, including science experts, industry leaders, scientists, program managers, and leaders from the public, academic, and private sectors who are actively working in AI and environmental sciences.

Registration for in-person participation for the September event concludes on August 29, 2025, or once maximum capacity is reached. Hybrid registration will remain open until September 15, 2025.

NOAA has a history of leveraging AI through these annual workshops. Previous events have explored collaborations on aligning AI with NOAA’s strategic priorities, focusing on use cases that can be sustained through online platforms. For instance, a workshop in September 2023 focused on collaboration building and active development of AI-powered applications around themes like Benchmarking Framework and Research-to-Operation-to-Research (R2O2R). Earlier workshops, such as the one in September 2021, emphasized Transforming Weather, Climate Services, and Blue Economy with Artificial Intelligence.
