TLDR: The Nigerian Federal Government, through the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), has approved a grant of N4.25 billion for 158 research projects under the 2024 National Research Fund. Additionally, 18 Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hubs, equipped with advanced technology including Artificial Intelligence labs, will be established across tertiary institutions to foster practical solutions and economic growth.
Abuja, Nigeria – In a significant boost to academic research and technological innovation, the Nigerian Federal Government has approved a substantial grant of N4,249,626,817.69 (approximately N4.25 billion) for the funding of 158 research projects. This landmark approval, announced on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, falls under the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) National Research Fund (NRF) 2024 Grant Cycle.
The decision follows a rigorous screening process conducted by the TETFund National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee (NRFS&MC), which evaluated an impressive 6,944 concept notes submitted by researchers from various institutions nationwide. Abdulmumin Oniyangi, the Director of Public Affairs for TETFund, confirmed the approval, highlighting the government’s commitment to fostering cutting-edge research relevant to national development.
The allocated funds are strategically distributed across key thematic areas: N2.35 billion is earmarked for Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation (SETI) projects, N1.03 billion for Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), and N870.7 million for Cross-Cutting (CC) research initiatives.
Several institutions emerged as leading beneficiaries of the NRF grants. The Federal University of Technology, Minna, secured the highest number of awards with 15 projects valued at over N400.04 million. Ahmadu Bello University followed with 13 awards totaling N359.81 million, and the Federal University of Technology, Akure, received 12 awards worth N341.61 million. Other prominent recipients include the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (11 awards, N256.35 million), Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi (10 awards, N273.41 million), and the University of Ilorin (8 awards, N220.54 million).
The funded research projects span a diverse range of critical areas aimed at addressing societal needs. These include the development of sustainable eco-friendly building systems for low-cost housing, hybrid plant-based fertilizers, intelligent aerial robotics for farmland weed and disease management, and innovative energy management meters. Notably, one of the groundbreaking projects approved is the ‘Development of an Artificial Intelligence-Enabled Internet of Medical Things for Military Physiological Monitoring and Activity Recognition System at War Zone,’ underscoring the government’s focus on advanced technological solutions.
In a related development, the Federal Government has also approved contracts for the establishment of 18 Innovation and Entrepreneurship Hubs across TETFund beneficiary institutions in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones. These hubs are designed to be multidisciplinary centers, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities such as electronics labs, 3D printing labs, laser technology labs, product design labs, robotics and coding centers, and dedicated Artificial Intelligence labs. The objective of these hubs is to accelerate the translation of research outputs into practical, solution-driven innovations for the Nigerian ecosystem.
Further demonstrating this commitment, an additional N1 billion each has been allocated under the 2025 Intervention Fund to 15 institutions, including Federal University Dutse, University of Uyo, and University of Ibadan, specifically to support the development of these Innovation Hubs and Entrepreneurship Centres. Other institutions like Federal Polytechnic, Bida, and Taraba State Polytechnic, Jalingo, are among those receiving N750 million each for similar purposes.
