This initiative was prominently featured during the Kids Innovation Challenge, an event that forms a crucial part of a broader empowerment program designed to provide children with cutting-edge technology and practical hard skills.
Abimola Ojenike, co-founder of The Destiny Trust, underscored the foundation’s core belief that every Nigerian child, particularly those from vulnerable communities, should be capable of utilizing technology not merely as consumers but as active creators and innovators. Ojenike highlighted Africa’s unique demographic position, possessing the largest youth population globally, which he described as presenting both a significant opportunity and a potential risk. He stressed that without proper empowerment and education today, this vast youth demographic could become a liability rather than a powerful asset for national development.
The Kids Innovation Challenge serves as a dynamic platform for young innovators across Nigeria to present their solutions to critical societal issues, thereby ensuring that the burgeoning youth population contributes positively to national progress. The program garnered an impressive response, receiving over 66 applications from children nationwide. These applications showcased diverse projects in fields such as software development, robotics, and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Following a rigorous initial shortlisting and interview process, ten outstanding finalists were selected to showcase their innovative ideas.
Ugo Nwaokike, Senior Counsel at Paystack and a judge at the event for the third consecutive time, emphasized the critical importance of supporting these children to fuel African ambition and sustain the ecosystem for future innovation. He noted the significant and tangible impact the program has had on young minds over the years. Among the notable achievements, OpticLearn AI emerged as a winner in the tech innovation category, demonstrating the high caliber of talent fostered by the program.
