This ambitious initiative, spearheaded by the National Senior Secondary Education Commission (NSSEC), aims to revolutionize the country’s education sector by embedding AI into pedagogical practices and preparing a new generation of students for the demands of a technologically advanced world.
The comprehensive five-week virtual training program, structured into five distinct modules, is a collaborative effort supported by Google Research, Data Science Nigeria, and Olabisi Onabanjo University Ogun State. Its core objective is to enhance the AI pedagogical skills of educators, enabling them to integrate AI tools and concepts effectively into their teaching methodologies.
Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, emphasized the critical importance of this program at its flag-off ceremony in Abuja. He stated, “The world is undergoing a technological revolution, and Artificial Intelligence is at its core. AI is no longer a futuristic concept but a present-day reality, transforming industries, economies, and societies.” Dr. Alausa further highlighted, “As educators, we must embrace this evolution and ensure our education sector is not left behind. The integration of AI into pedagogy offers an unprecedented opportunity to enhance learning experiences, personalize education, and develop critical thinking skills among our students. Our goal is to prepare them for careers in a technology-driven world, where AI literacy will be as fundamental as reading and writing.”
Dr. Iyela Ajayi, the Executive Secretary of NSSEC, echoed these sentiments, describing the program as a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s pursuit of educational excellence. He underscored that the training is not merely about introducing new tools but about empowering teachers to harness AI’s potential to create more engaging, personalized, and effective learning experiences. Dr. Ajayi also called upon state governments, school administrators, and private sector stakeholders to support the initiative, stressing the need for investment in infrastructure, teacher training, and student welfare to ensure inclusive educational advancement.
