New Centre for Creative AI Forges Academia-Industry Alliance to Revolutionize Creative Talent in the AI Era

TLDR: University College London, the Royal College of Art, and The Brandtech Group have partnered to launch the Centre for Creative AI (CCAI) this autumn. This initiative aims to redefine creative talent development by integrating AI across various creative industries, fostering collaboration between academia and industry, and exploring commercially viable AI applications in fields like entertainment, media, fashion, music, and art. The Centre will be chaired by Alex Mahon, former Channel 4 CEO, and is supported by major brands including Diageo and Unilever.

A groundbreaking collaboration between University College London (UCL), the Royal College of Art (RCA), and The Brandtech Group is set to launch the Centre for Creative AI (CCAI) this autumn. This new initiative marks a significant step in redefining how creative talent is developed and nurtured within an economy increasingly integrated with artificial intelligence.

The Centre for Creative AI is designed to be a pioneering forum dedicated to exploring and showcasing breakthroughs in AI across the creative industries. Its scope extends to diverse sectors including entertainment, media, fashion, music, art, and design. The partnership aims to bridge the gap between academic research and industry application, fostering a new paradigm for creative innovation.

Key industry players are already backing the Centre, with founding supporters including Diageo, Unilever, Runway, Snap, the leading AI law firm Cooley, and the Design Museum. These organizations will collaborate with academia to identify and implement opportunities where AI can be applied within creative contexts, pushing beyond mere productivity enhancements to spark entirely new forms of creativity.

Mark Eaves, founder of Brandtech agency Gravity Road and a key architect of the Centre, highlighted the rapid shift in perception regarding AI. ‘It’s amazing how quickly it’s moved from being a novelty to rapidly becoming part of the creative instinct itself,’ Eaves stated, underscoring the profound impact AI is having on creative processes.

The Centre’s operational model emphasizes cross-functional collaboration, bringing together technologists, artists, and business leaders. It prioritizes learning agility over specific skills, recognizing the dynamic nature of AI’s evolution. The CCAI will connect companies with the innovative capacity of students and alumni from UCL and RCA, stimulating a diverse range of challenges, thought leadership, and professional development opportunities to deepen the understanding of AI’s application and impact across creative disciplines.

David Jones, Founder and CEO of The Brandtech Group, articulated a bold vision for generative AI’s role. ‘Gen AI is sparking the greatest creative revolution in history, in my opinion,’ Jones remarked. ‘It’s not a matter of ‘if’ AI will be more creative than humans, it’s just when. What a lot of people don’t realise is Gen AI is not a ‘tool’, it’s an intelligence and it will augment human creativity to incredible levels, shaping completely new forms of creativity.’ He further noted that the CCAI’s ambition is expansive, aiming to spark new ideas created in exceptional ways, extending across the full marketing spectrum from product design to immersive brand experiences.

Giles Hedger, Global Consumer Planning Director at Diageo, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, ‘this partnership is an opportunity to collaborate with the world’s best, to push our thinking beyond the productivity layer, harnessing technology to grow our brands through ever-deeper consumer connection.’

The Centre will be chaired by Alex Mahon, the outgoing CEO of Channel 4, who commented that ‘Gen AI is a powerful new frontier.’ Its governance structure will include an advisory council composed of business leaders, university figures, and research funders, with a board of directors administering its operations. All profits generated by the Centre will be reinvested directly into its core mission of supporting the growth and understanding of AI in the creative field.
