Netflix Unveils Comprehensive Generative AI Guidelines for Production Partners

TLDR: Netflix has released a detailed 1,900-word document outlining its guidelines for generative AI (GenAI) use in content production, emphasizing transparency, responsibility, and ethical considerations. The streaming giant views GenAI as a valuable creative aid, aiming to enhance production workflows rather than replace human creativity. The guidelines cover data use, creative output, talent and performance, and ethical representation, with specific scenarios requiring written approval. This move follows Netflix’s successful integration of GenAI in its series ‘The Eternaut,’ which saw significant efficiency gains.

Netflix has officially published its ‘Using Generative AI in Content Production’ guidelines, a comprehensive 1,900-word document designed to provide clarity and direction for its global production partners on the responsible and transparent application of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) tools. The guidelines, released on August 21, 2025, underscore Netflix’s commitment to leveraging AI as a ‘valuable creative aid’ rather than a replacement for human talent.

The document outlines five core guiding principles for GenAI use: ensuring outputs do not replicate or infringe copyrighted material; preventing generative tools from storing, reusing, or training on production data inputs or outputs; utilizing enterprise-secured environments for safeguarding inputs; ensuring generated material is temporary and not part of final deliverables; and prohibiting the use of GenAI to replace or generate new talent performances or union-covered work without explicit consent. Certain high-risk use cases, such as those involving final deliverables, talent likeness, personal data, or third-party intellectual property, will necessitate written approval from Netflix.

This proactive step by Netflix comes after its successful integration of GenAI in the Argentinian post-apocalyptic sci-fi series ‘The Eternaut.’ Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos previously highlighted the efficiency gains from this integration, noting that a visual effects sequence depicting a collapsing building in Buenos Aires was completed ’10 times faster’ than with traditional VFX methods, and at a lower cost. Sarandos emphasized that AI serves to ‘enhance production workflows,’ stating, ‘This is real people doing real work with better tools.’

The guidelines also address broader industry concerns, particularly in Hollywood, where unions like the Screen Actors Guild and The Writers Guild of America have previously gone on strike, partly over creative protections against AI use. Netflix’s global presence across 190 countries means its operations often extend beyond the reach of Hollywood’s collective bargaining agreements, making these internal guidelines crucial.

Beyond content production, Netflix is expanding its GenAI applications across its platform. Co-CEO Greg Peters indicated that the technology is being deployed in personalization, search, and advertising systems. The company is also preparing to launch interactive, AI-driven advertisements in the latter half of 2025. These technological advancements coincide with Netflix’s strong financial performance, reporting $11.08 billion in revenue for Q2, a 16% year-over-year increase, and a net profit of $3.13 billion. Viewership in the first half of 2025 reached over 95 billion hours, with one-third attributed to non-English content.
