Netflix Seeks Director for Generative AI in Games Amidst Industry Layoffs, Offering Up to $840,000 Annually

TLDR: Netflix is making a significant investment in artificial intelligence for its gaming division, advertising a Director of Generative AI for Games position with a salary ranging from $430,000 to $840,000 per year. This move comes as the broader video game industry faces widespread layoffs, highlighting Netflix’s commitment to leveraging AI to create novel and scalable player experiences, from core capabilities to in-game features and entirely new forms of play.

In a notable counter-trend to the ongoing wave of layoffs sweeping across the video game industry, streaming giant Netflix has announced a high-profile opening for a Director of Generative AI for Games. The position boasts an attractive annual salary ranging from $430,000 to $840,000, signaling Netflix’s serious commitment to integrating advanced artificial intelligence into its burgeoning gaming efforts.

The successful candidate will be tasked with a broad mandate: to ‘shape and scale’ Netflix’s approach to Generative AI across its games organization. This includes defining the Gen AI strategy, identifying opportunities for its application across the company’s game portfolio and studios, and improving workflows and pipelines. The role also involves engaging with game teams to develop prototype features and ‘AI-native gameplay mechanics,’ ensuring both technical viability and compelling player experiences. Collaboration with external researchers, developers, and companies pioneering work in generative AI is also a key responsibility.

This strategic investment in AI aligns with Netflix’s broader vision, as articulated by its co-CEO, Ted Sarandos, who has expressed enthusiasm for AI’s potential to lower production costs. The company’s previous VP of GenAI for Games, Mike Verdu, who departed in 2024, had also championed AI as ‘the future of gaming,’ stating that this ‘transformational technology will accelerate the velocity of development and unlock truly novel game experiences that will surprise, delight, and inspire players.’

The move comes amidst a challenging period for the gaming sector, marked by significant job cuts at various companies. Netflix, however, appears to be doubling down on its gaming ambitions, which currently include over 120 games available to subscribers on mobile and PC, with ongoing tests for cloud gaming services on TVs and PCs in multiple countries.

Generative AI technology, though still in its early stages within game development, holds immense potential. It can be applied to diverse aspects such as code generation, graphic creation, text writing, audio processing, and the production of 2D and 3D assets. While fully AI-generated games are nascent, projects like Google Research and Deepmind’s GameNGen system (simulating DOOM) and the AI research model DIAMOND (rendering Counter-Strike) demonstrate its capabilities. However, these systems still face technical hurdles, such as limited ‘memory’ and issues with image clarity and consistency.
