NatWest Group has embarked on a significant five-year collaboration with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Accenture, signaling a major push towards an AI-driven and data-centric future. Announced on July 23, 2025, this strategic partnership is designed to accelerate the bank’s enterprise-wide data and artificial intelligence transformation, modernizing its digital, data analytics, and AI capabilities.
The core objective of this initiative is to deliver more intuitive and personalized services to NatWest’s approximately 20 million customers globally, while simultaneously enhancing operational efficiency. The collaboration will leverage the extensive cloud, AI, and banking expertise of Accenture and AWS to better respond to customer needs and streamline internal processes.
A key component of the transformation involves consolidating various data streams into a single, bank-wide data platform, powered by AI. This unified platform is expected to improve service speed and product delivery. For instance, the bank anticipates reducing the time it takes to warn customers about fraudulent activity from days to mere hours, significantly bolstering fraud prevention efforts. Beyond customer service, the platform will also address critical back-office challenges, including security, capital management, and regulatory reporting.
Paul Thwaite, CEO of NatWest Group, emphasized the importance of this alliance, stating, “This collaboration with Accenture and AWS is key to helping us progress the transformation of NatWest as we become a simpler, more technology and data-driven bank.” He added, “Equipped with high-quality data, we can continue to quietly revolutionize how we serve our customers through the use of AI and other technologies.” The deal is also intended to uplift the skills of NatWest’s workforce and cultivate a robust data-driven culture.

This move comes as UK lenders are in a competitive race to modernize their systems amidst rising competition from fintech companies and pressure on traditional revenue streams. NatWest’s rivals, such as Lloyds Banking Group, have also been expanding their AI and cloud infrastructure. While the project’s specific cost was not disclosed, the bank aims to make its customer relationships more responsive and data-driven. NatWest has stated that potential job reductions are not a primary focus, though such overhauls in the industry can carry operational risks, as evidenced by past IT meltdowns during major migrations.
