TLDR: The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has commenced the installation of AI-powered speed radar systems across major roads as part of its Rs 197 crore Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS) project. This initiative aims to enhance road safety and modernize traffic management in the city.
Nagpur is taking a significant leap in urban traffic management with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) beginning the deployment of AI-powered speed radar systems. This move is a crucial component of the ambitious Rs 197 crore Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS) project, being implemented through the agency Keltron.
The first phase of the IITMS project is actively underway, with Keltron having successfully integrated the system at 10 of the 171 identified traffic junctions within the city. A pilot installation of the advanced speed radar system has been completed on the busy Omkar Nagar Square–Manewada Square stretch, marking a key milestone in the project.
These state-of-the-art systems are equipped with radar sensors, Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, and high-intensity strobe flash units. This sophisticated combination enables the system to detect overspeeding vehicles in real-time, capture high-resolution images of license plates even at night, and instantly transmit this data to the city’s centralized traffic control command center. A senior Keltron official stated, ‘The radar system was successfully calibrated and integrated. Once a vehicle exceeds the speed limit, the system triggers the camera to capture high-resolution images of the number plate, even at night.’
The AI-powered enforcement system represents a major upgrade under the IITMS project, which has overarching goals to modernize traffic management, significantly improve road safety, and reduce accident rates across Nagpur. The radar unit on the Omkar Nagar–Manewada stretch is the inaugural installation among many planned for 32 major roads, specifically targeting areas with high traffic volume and prevalent speeding issues. In certain junctions or routes, multiple radar units will be strategically installed to ensure comprehensive coverage of both sides of the carriageway.

In parallel with the radar installations, Keltron has also initiated the conversion of 50 traffic intersections under the IITMS. This includes the installation of smart traffic signals, vehicle-actuated systems, surveillance cameras, and real-time traffic data integration at each junction. These upgrades are part of a broader strategy to equip all 171 junctions with intelligent systems. Each radar and junction system is seamlessly connected to the NMC’s centralized traffic control room, facilitating real-time monitoring, efficient data collection, and automated violation alerts. Senior civic officials, including the municipal commissioner, are expected to inspect the radar installation site soon, while Keltron’s technical teams continue to monitor the systems’ functionality on the ground. The IITMS project is a vital part of Nagpur’s Smart City initiative, poised to revolutionize traffic monitoring, enforcement, and overall management within the city.
