Monash University, Indonesia, has once again demonstrated its pioneering role in the integration of generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) within higher education, as highlighted during its annual EduVate 2025 conference. Held in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, the event convened hundreds of educators, students, policymakers, and industry leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region to explore the transformative impact of AI and the necessity of inclusive learning environments.
Themed ‘The Transformative Role of Generative AI and Inclusive Learning Ecosystems,’ EduVate 2025 featured 72 speakers representing over 40 institutions from various countries. Professor Matthew Nicholson, Pro Vice-Chancellor and President of Monash University, Indonesia, emphasized the rapid revolution brought by generative AI across industries. He stated, ‘The role of higher education institutions is not merely to keep pace with developments, but to become pioneers by equipping graduates with relevant skills, ethics, and agility for the future.’ Nicholson added, ‘Through EduVate 2025, we bring this important discussion to a real stage, ensuring every innovation goes hand in hand with the values of inclusivity and the needs of the working world.’
The conference addressed the global challenges of AI adoption, with insights from a McKinsey global management consultant study revealing a paradox: 92% of companies worldwide plan to increase AI investments over the next three years, yet only 1% have fully integrated it into their workflows. The primary barrier identified is a talent shortage, with 46% of leaders citing limited workforce skills as a major challenge.
In response, Lukman, Head of LLDIKTI Region IV, underscored the importance of human resource development. ‘Facing various challenges in the world of work, the integration of AI in education is not just about technology, but about preparing talent capable of driving meaningful change. EduVate is expected to bridge academic and industry cooperation to ensure graduates are ready for future challenges,’ he remarked.
Echoing this sentiment, prominent educator and entrepreneur Gita Wirjawan stressed the need to strengthen STEM education. He noted that Indonesia requires more STEM graduates to contribute to AI development, stating, ‘From a broader perspective, the most fundamental investment our nation needs to make is to create a generation open-minded to innovation, through education accessible to all.’ Wirjawan further elaborated that educators must be adaptable and innovative, capable of inspiring students to combine ambition and imagination.
Monash University’s commitment to AI talent development is reflected in its global reputation, ranking first in Australia for Computer Science and 34th globally for Data Science and AI. In Indonesia, Monash offers future-focused study programs such as Master of Data Science, Master of Business Innovation, and Master of Cybersecurity to address the digital talent gap.
Beyond academic programs, Monash has forged strategic partnerships with industry and government. A notable initiative is its US$60 million investment in the MAVERIC AI Supercomputer, one of the world’s most advanced AI supercomputers. MAVERIC, built with NVIDIA GB200 NVL72 infrastructure and Dell Technologies, features an advanced cooling system that is 300 times more water-efficient than conventional systems. It supports complex data analysis and breakthroughs in diverse fields, including cancer detection, clinical trials, advanced manufacturing, climate science, and medical engineering.
Monash has also established strategic alliances with 10 private Indonesian universities, offering priority pathways for master’s degrees and AI masterclasses with Monash experts. A recent initiative includes a joint degree program with Universitas Bunda Mulia (UBM), allowing students to complete a Bachelor’s degree at UBM (3.5 years) and a Master’s degree at Monash University, Indonesia (1.5 years) in Data Science or Cybersecurity.
