Microsoft Initiates Public Testing for Internally Developed AI Foundation Models

Microsoft has officially launched the public testing phase for its inaugural set of internally developed artificial intelligence foundation models, marking a pivotal moment in the company’s AI strategy. This initiative introduces two distinct models: MAI-Voice-1, a speech generation model, and MAI-1-preview, a text-based model.

MAI-Voice-1 is engineered for highly expressive and natural speech generation, capable of producing a full minute of high-fidelity audio in under a second using just a single GPU. This efficiency positions it as one of the most streamlined speech systems available. The model is already integrated into several Microsoft products, including Copilot Daily for news summaries, Podcasts, and is accessible through a new Copilot Labs experience, supporting both single and multi-speaker scenarios.

Complementing the speech model, MAI-1-preview is designed to handle complex text-based tasks, such as instruction-following and natural language question-and-answer interactions. This foundational model underwent extensive training on approximately 15,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs. It is currently available for public evaluation on LMArena, a platform for community model assessment, and is slated for integration into various text-based use cases within Microsoft’s Copilot assistant in the coming weeks.

This development underscores Microsoft’s strategic pivot towards building its own robust AI capabilities, aiming for increased independence in a field where it has historically relied heavily on partnerships, notably with OpenAI. Mustafa Suleyman, Microsoft AI chief, emphasized the significance of this milestone, stating, “MAI-1-preview represents our first foundation model trained end to end in house.” He further highlighted the focus on efficiency, noting that ‘the art and craft of training models is selecting the perfect data and not wasting any of your flops on unnecessary tokens that didn’t actually teach your model very much.’

The creation of these models follows Microsoft’s concerted effort to expand its AI division, which saw the hiring of DeepMind and Inflection AI co-founder Mustafa Suleyman to lead Microsoft AI, and former Meta engineering chief Jay Parikh to head a new AI engineering group. While MAI-1-preview currently ranks 13th for text workloads on LMArena, trailing models from other major players, its introduction signifies Microsoft’s long-term commitment to becoming a more autonomous and competitive force in AI development. The company plans to continue orchestrating a range of specialized models to serve diverse user needs and use cases.
