This strategic partnership was solidified during a three-day official working visit to Singapore by Malaysia’s Chief Secretary to the Government (KSN), Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar, which commenced on Friday, July 18, 2025. The primary areas identified for cooperation include GovTech, public housing, and comprehensive public sector reforms.
Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar emphasized Malaysia’s keen interest in learning from Singapore’s advanced digital governance models. ‘We want to learn from Singapore. Firstly, in regard to GovTech, as they have already implemented it, while we are in the process of launching our own,’ he stated. Singapore’s success in developing and deploying a robust digital government infrastructure, which includes digital identity systems, e-payments, and AI-driven analytics for policy decision-making, serves as a key benchmark for Malaysia’s own initiatives.
Beyond GovTech, the collaboration extends to affordable housing, where Malaysia seeks insights from the Singapore Housing Board’s successful models. Additionally, reforms within the broader public service framework are a crucial component of this knowledge exchange. Tan Sri Shamsul Azri highlighted that Singapore has welcomed these proposals, engaging in discussions to facilitate the exchange of best practices and strategic cooperation between the two governments.
