Artificial Intelligence Set to Drive Singapore’s Sustained 3% Annual GDP Growth

TLDR: A July 2025 report by Morgan Stanley Research indicates that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is crucial for Singapore to maintain a 3% annual GDP growth, counteracting long-term demographic challenges. The report highlights Singapore’s proactive national AI strategies, high corporate adoption rates, and strategic investments as key drivers for its economic resilience and positioning as a leading developed economy.

Singapore is poised to sustain an impressive 3% annual Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth, largely propelled by the strategic integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), according to a comprehensive report released in July 2025 by Morgan Stanley Research. This projection comes despite the looming long-term demographic challenges faced by the city-state, underscoring AI’s critical role in bolstering productivity and securing Singapore’s position among the fastest-growing developed economies.

The report attributes Singapore’s robust AI momentum to several foundational elements: its early adoption of national AI strategies, a strong collaborative environment between public and private sectors, and targeted investments in essential infrastructure. With over 70% of companies surveyed already integrating AI into their operations, the technology’s applications are diverse, spanning internal productivity tools, customer-facing services, supply chain optimization, and product development.

Further reinforcing this commitment, Singapore’s updated National AI Strategy 2.0 is designed to support these efforts across key economic sectors, including manufacturing, financial services, logistics, and healthcare. The strategy also emphasizes foundational AI research, talent development, robust data governance, and fostering public trust in AI technologies.

Morgan Stanley categorizes companies into two distinct groups based on their AI engagement. ‘AI Enablers’ such as Singtel, Keppel, and Sembcorp Industries are actively developing the foundational infrastructure, including data centers, energy systems, and connectivity solutions. Conversely, ‘AI Adopters’ like Grab, Sea Group, Singapore Airlines, and ST Engineering are implementing AI to enhance operational efficiency, spur innovation, and scale their digital capabilities. While many companies remain cautious about quantifying the precise financial impact of AI adoption, some anticipate modest growth in earnings and capital expenditure.

The report also acknowledges potential risks associated with widespread AI adoption, including cybersecurity threats, the potential for misuse of AI, and the significant challenge of retraining the existing workforce. In response, the Singaporean government has proactively introduced ongoing support measures, notably through upskilling initiatives like SkillsFuture, to mitigate these concerns.

Morgan Stanley analysts view Singapore’s comprehensive AI strategy as a potential blueprint for how other small, advanced economies can effectively integrate emerging technologies to address structural challenges and ensure sustained long-term growth. This strategic foresight positions Singapore not only as an economic powerhouse but also as a ‘safe haven’ for global capital, further solidifying its financial standing.
