Lumen Accelerates AI Infrastructure with Enhanced High-Speed Networking Solutions

TLDR: Lumen Technologies is rolling out advanced networking solutions, including 400 Gbps Ethernet and IP services, across more than 70 data centers in 16 major U.S. metro markets. This strategic expansion is designed to meet the escalating demands of AI workloads and multi-cloud environments, providing businesses with faster, more flexible, and scalable connectivity essential for the AI-first economy.

Lumen Technologies has announced a significant expansion of its U.S. network capabilities, introducing high-speed networking solutions specifically engineered to support the burgeoning demands of artificial intelligence (AI) workloads and multi-cloud architectures. This initiative includes the deployment of up to 400 Gbps Ethernet and IP services across more than 70 third-party, ‘cloud on-ramp ready’ data centers in 16 densely connected metropolitan markets across the United States. San Antonio is slated to join this enhanced network infrastructure during the fourth quarter of 2025.

The company’s strategic move is a direct response to the critical need for faster data transfer and processing capabilities driven by the rapid growth of AI. Lumen’s newly introduced ‘RapidRoutes’ service is designed to streamline the process for high-capacity connections, effectively eliminating traditional long quoting periods and engineering delays. Dave Ward, Lumen’s Chief Technology and Product Officer, underscored the importance of robust connectivity, stating that ‘connectivity and moving that data to feed the platform to feed the LLMs’ is often overlooked in AI strategies. He highlighted the dramatic increase in AI data centers, projecting a quadrupling in the next three years, which necessitates a fundamentally different transformation speed for network infrastructure.

Ashley-Haynes Gaspar, Lumen’s Chief Revenue Officer, emphasized the broader vision behind this investment. “This investment isn’t just about faster data center connectivity – it’s about creating the digital foundation for an AI-first economy,” she stated. Gaspar further added, “We’re giving customers what they need most: performance, flexibility and speed at scale, whether they’re turning up a single connection or orchestrating thousands of AI workloads across metro markets.”

Industry experts acknowledge the strategic foresight of Lumen’s investment. Ghassan Abdo, Vice President of Research, Worldwide Telecommunications at IDC, commented, “Lumen’s network investment in bringing high-speed connectivity to key data centers is a strategic move to meet the growing demand for more capacity and reach across data centers, anticipating customer needs amid the AI boom where network is emerging as an indispensable resource.”

Lumen’s expansive fiber network is a cornerstone of this offering, enabling customers to provision bandwidth quickly and scale up to 400Gbps on demand, paying only for the capacity they utilize. This flexibility is crucial for managing fluctuating AI and data-intensive demands. The suite of services available includes Ethernet On-Demand, Internet On-Demand, E-Line (point-to-point Ethernet), E-LAN (multipoint-to-multipoint Ethernet), and E-Access (simplified access to broader Ethernet networks). The company is committed to further expanding its fiber infrastructure, with a goal to reach 47 million intercity fiber miles by the end of 2028.

Beyond external offerings, Lumen is also integrating AI internally to enhance its operational efficiency, including resolving customer disputes. By positioning itself as ‘the trusted network for AI,’ Lumen aims to be a pivotal partner in the ongoing digital transformation, ensuring businesses have the agile and high-performance network foundation required to lead in an AI-driven world.
