TLDR: The data center Ethernet switch market experienced a significant 25% year-over-year increase in both revenue and shipments during the first half of 2025, largely driven by the rapid adoption of generative AI. This surge has particularly accelerated the deployment of 800 gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switches, which are being adopted at a much faster rate than their 400GbE predecessors.
The data center Ethernet switch market has achieved unprecedented growth in the first half of 2025, with both revenues and shipments climbing by a robust 25% year-over-year, according to a new report from Crehan Research. This remarkable expansion is primarily attributed to the escalating demand for generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications, which are profoundly reshaping the landscape of data center networking.
Seamus Crehan, president of Crehan Research, highlighted the transformative impact of AI, stating, “Generative AI has dramatically changed the ramps for new higher Ethernet speeds, driving much steeper and faster adoption curves.” The report indicates a significant surge in the deployment of 800 gigabit Ethernet (GbE) switches, whose adoption rate is proving to be considerably faster than that of 400GbE technology. Specifically, branded 800GbE data center switching has shown an adoption curve nearly one hundred times better than 400GbE to date. This rapid uptake aligns with earlier predictions that 800GbE would experience the fastest-ever data center Ethernet switch speed ramp.
The report also detailed key vendor performances in this booming market:
Arista Networks demonstrated exceptional growth, with its 800GbE shipments in Q2 2025 nearing an annualized run-rate of 3 million ports. This marks Arista’s quickest achievement of such a quarterly volume for a new Ethernet speed, securing its position as the top market share leader in the branded 800GbE data center switch segment.
H3C saw its 400GbE shipments more than double in Q2 2025, exceeding one million ports for the quarter. This growth was largely propelled by strong demand from China’s hyperscale data center operators, positioning H3C as the second-largest market share holder in branded data center 400GbE switch shipments.
Huawei experienced an almost twofold sequential increase in its data center Ethernet switch revenue, driven by extensive AI network deployments. Huawei’s switches are also integral components of the recently launched CloudMatrix 384 AI system.
Crehan further noted that “The networking of large generative AI cluster build-outs is driving some dramatic quarter-to-quarter market share shifts in the highest speeds of the data center Ethernet switch market.” This underscores the dynamic and competitive nature of the market as companies vie to meet the intense bandwidth demands of AI workloads.

Looking ahead, Crehan Research anticipates continued strong growth, with combined Ethernet switch and NIC market revenue projected to double within five years, surpassing $50 billion. Generative AI is expected to be a primary catalyst, with back-end AI Ethernet networking alone forecast to increase eight-fold and account for over one-third of the total revenue. Seamus Crehan emphasized the unique requirements of generative AI, stating, “Not only does generative AI require a lot more network bandwidth than other workloads, but it also requires it at a faster cadence.”
