L&T’s Digital Engineering Revolution: Integrating BIM, AI, and Smart Construction at AEC Forum 2025

At the recent AEC Forum 2025, Satish MV, Executive Committee Member & Advisor to the Chairman and Managing Director of Larsen & Toubro (L&T), delivered a compelling presentation on how digital engineering is fundamentally reshaping the global construction and infrastructure landscape. L&T’s comprehensive adoption of digital technologies, including Building Information Modeling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and digital twins, is at the forefront of this revolution.

L&T has embraced BIM across all its dimensions—3D, 4D, 5D, 6D, and 7D—to enhance project execution. This multi-dimensional approach allows for automated generative design, as seen in projects like the Navi Mumbai Airport, and the establishment of common data environments that effectively eliminate version control issues and foster seamless collaboration. The integration of BIM facilitates budget certainty, optimizes project timelines, ensures safety-by-design, enables robust sustainability planning, and supports real-time facility management. Examples cited include the simulation of sequences for India’s high-speed rail and PTND substations to optimize logistics and maintain schedules, and the use of 5D BIM to integrate budget into models for real-time cost analysis.

Beyond BIM, L&T is strategically deploying geospatial technology for its mega Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) projects. A significant highlight is the application of Artificial Intelligence for critical functions such as contract analysis and cost estimation, demonstrating AI’s direct impact on operational efficiency and financial predictability. Furthermore, digital twins are being utilized for smart operations, transforming physical spaces into digital assets with millimeter-level accuracy. This allows for ‘digital rehearsals’ of construction processes, as implemented at Kutney and P25 projects, leading to fewer on-site surprises, faster builds, and improved team synchronization.
