TLDR: Lloyds Banking Group has launched Athena, a generative AI-powered knowledge hub designed to significantly enhance efficiency and customer experience by providing rapid access to internal information for customer service colleagues. This initiative is projected to yield at least £50 million in revenue growth and productivity improvements in 2025.
Lloyds Banking Group has announced the rollout of ‘Athena,’ its first large-scale generative artificial intelligence (AI) product, marking a significant leap in the bank’s digital transformation strategy. This innovative AI-powered knowledge hub is specifically designed to support customer service colleagues by providing swift and accurate access to a vast repository of internal information.
Athena serves as a centralized knowledge base, capable of scanning through 13,000 internal articles to deliver immediate answers to frontline staff in branches, call centers, and other customer-facing roles. This capability has drastically reduced the average time spent searching for information from 59 seconds to approximately 20 seconds, representing a remarkable 66% improvement in efficiency. For telephone banking teams alone, Athena is projected to save an estimated 4,000 hours annually, time previously spent on information retrieval or keeping customers on hold.
Since its introduction earlier in 2025, Athena has seen widespread adoption across the Group, with 21,000 employees already utilizing the tool to conduct over 2.1 million searches. Lloyds Banking Group aims to expand Athena’s deployment to many more customer support roles, targeting an impressive 40 million searches by the end of the year. Customer support colleagues were actively involved in the development and testing of Athena, ensuring its accuracy and providing continuous feedback for quality improvement.
Pete Steel, Consumer Engagement Director at Lloyds Banking Group, stated, ‘With Athena, our colleagues can support our customers faster and more effectively than ever before. Simplifying the process of accessing the information our customers need, in a fraction of the time, means we focus on valuable conversations with our customers, save them time and support them in the moments that matter most.’
Ranil Boteju, Group Chief Data and Analytics Officer at Lloyds Banking Group, emphasized the transformative nature of this technology, remarking, ‘Athena is a monumental leap in our digital and strategic evolution, as we harness the power of generative AI to supercharge efficiency and elevate the customer experience. This technology isn’t just an upgrade – it’s a revolution. We are freeing up thousands of hours as Athena puts critical information at our colleagues’ fingertips, leaving them free to help our customers with more complex, bespoke needs.’

This deployment is part of Lloyds’ broader strategy to embed AI across its operations, including the development of machine learning and generative AI systems on Google Cloud’s Vertex AI platform. The bank anticipates that AI will be a significant accelerator for its strategic transformation, contributing at least £50 million in revenue growth and productivity improvements in 2025. Lloyds is also developing an underlying architecture for AI agents that could be deployed for various use cases, such as financial advice, software development, or underwriting, with plans to launch a consumer-facing AI agent as early as August.
