LG CNS Establishes Silicon Valley R&D Hub to Spearhead Physical AI and Robotics Innovation

The new R&D center will concentrate on two pivotal areas: AI transformation (AX) and robot transformation (RX). In the AX domain, LG CNS aims to discover and develop ‘agentic AI’ technologies. These advanced AI systems are designed to autonomously solve complex problems, moving beyond mere task assistance to provide more sophisticated and independent solutions. This initiative underscores a commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI capabilities.

Simultaneously, the RX domain will focus on securing next-generation robotic technologies. A key component of this effort is the development of robotic software, which serves as the ‘brain’ for robots in physical AI applications. This includes the crucial ‘Robotic Foundation Models (RFM),’ which are general-purpose AI models enabling robots to operate autonomously and adaptively in diverse environments. Unlike traditional robots limited to specific tasks, RFMs empower robots to learn, make judgments, and perform a multitude of functions, making them a critical determinant of future competitiveness in the robotics industry.

LG CNS’s strategy involves active collaboration with global technology leaders. The company has already partnered with AI firm Cohere to jointly develop a reasoning-based large language model (LLM) solution specifically for agentic AI. Furthermore, it is working with Skilled AI, an AI-based robotics company, to secure and internalize RFM technology. These partnerships are crucial for accelerating the development and integration of cutting-edge AI and robotics solutions.

The company also highlighted its collaboration with mobility platform company Bear Robotics for the development of autonomous mobile robot (AMR) technology. This comprehensive approach reflects a broader industry trend where major tech companies like Google DeepMind and NVIDIA are intensifying their research into RFM by integrating robotic data into their generative AI models.

An LG CNS official stated, “We plan to secure innovative technologies and services by collaborating with promising startups, tech companies, and research institutions, using Silicon Valley as our base.” The official further added, “We will also pursue recruiting global talent with Master’s or Ph.D. degrees and strategic mergers and acquisitions (M&A) to bolster our capabilities.”
