Lenovo’s Framework for Responsible AI: Leadership and Six Core Pillars

TLDR: Lenovo is deeply committed to the ethical development and deployment of AI, a strategy spearheaded by Senior Vice President and Chief Security and AI Officer Doug Fisher. The company’s ‘Smarter AI for All’ initiative is founded on six core pillars: inclusion, privacy and security, accountability and reliability, explainability, transparency, and environmental and social impact. This commitment is materialized through innovative projects such as ‘Alzheimer’s Intelligence’ and an AI-powered communication solution for ALS, alongside sustainability tools like the Lenovo Intelligent Sustainability Solutions Advisor (LISSA) for emissions estimation and the Lenovo ESG Navigator for monitoring ESG metrics. Lenovo also actively engages with global bodies like the World Economic Forum and UNESCO to advance AI governance and align with emerging regulations.

Lenovo promotes ethical AI, emphasising inclusion, transparency and environmental concerns as part of its six key pillars. Its Responsible AI Council assures that AI-enhanced offerings comply with ethical, legal and societal norms. It fosters innovation through initiatives that enhance human health and sustainability, such as Alzheimer’s Intelligence and carbon emissions assessment tools. By integrating governance and accountability in its AI strategy, Lenovo aims to develop smarter technology for both people and the environment. Its Senior Vice President and Chief Security and AI Officer, Doug Fisher, shares more in this Q&A.

Doug Fisher, Senior Vice President and Chief Security and AI Officer at Lenovo, leads security across Lenovo. His responsibility includes ensuring the integrity of Lenovo’s products, solutions and services, global supply chain and data protection. In 2024, his role was expanded to lead Lenovo’s AI governance, championing its AI policy alongside Lenovo’s Responsible AI Council. Fisher joined Lenovo in 2018, initially serving as Chief Operating Officer of Lenovo’s Infrastructure Solutions Group, and previously spent over 20 years at Intel, where he led its Software Solutions Group.

Lenovo’s Responsible AI Council is a cross-functional governance body that evaluates AI applications for ethical, legal or liability risks. This addresses growing scepticism among customers due to concerns over copyrighted training data, data leakage, privacy violations, and criminal instructions. Lenovo believes that responsible AI must be built from the bottom up, fostering a culture focused on the ethical rollout of AI-enabled products, solutions, and services, with the Council ensuring all AI activities are legal, fair, transparent, and explainable.

Lenovo’s commitment to ‘Smarter AI for All’ is underpinned by six core pillars: Inclusion, Privacy and security, Accountability and reliability, Explainability, Transparency, and Environmental and social impact. These pillars guide Lenovo’s approach to AI and technology, ensuring it is both smart and responsible. Fisher highlighted two key projects launched at Lenovo’s Tech World event: ‘Alzheimer’s Intelligence,’ which uses custom AI to create a photorealistic 3D avatar offering compassionate advice to those with dementia and Alzheimer’s, and an AI-powered communication solution for people with ALS, developed in collaboration with The Scott Morgan Foundation, currently in active testing.

AI’s impact extends beyond human and social issues to environmental management. Lenovo utilizes generative AI through its Intelligent Sustainability Solutions Advisor (LISSA) to estimate emissions across the IT lifecycle. In October, the company introduced the Lenovo ESG Navigator solution, a tool providing near-real-time insights on GHG emissions and energy use at customer factory sites. Furthermore, Lenovo is enhancing energy efficiency with its next-generation Neptune liquid cooling technology, which offers 100% heat removal, enabling 100kW+ server racks without specialized air conditioning, thus simplifying supercomputing for various organizations.

As Chief Security and AI Officer, Fisher’s leadership in AI governance aligns with Lenovo’s global AI policy, introduced last year. ‘Oversight & Governance’ is one of three core policy pillars, focusing on algorithmic fairness, regulatory compliance, and robust data infrastructure. Lenovo actively builds coalitions with industry partners like the World Economic Forum’s AI Governance Alliance and has committed to the Canadian Government’s Voluntary Commitment to Responsible, Ethical Generative AI and UNESCO’s Commitment to and Recommendation on the Ethics of AI. This proactive approach aims to align Lenovo’s products with emerging global regulations, such as the European Union’s AI Act.

Lenovo enforces its six pillars of Responsible AI by integrating them into daily work, starting with the question: ‘who’s using this and how?’ This guides the design, build, and deployment of AI throughout its product lifecycle. A privacy mandate, in place since 2007, ensures data collection is minimal, purposeful, and legitimate. Recognizing AI’s potential to amplify bias, Lenovo emphasizes retraining AI models with diverse datasets and regularly re-evaluating them for real-world impact. Accountability is maintained through documented AI system development and rigorous testing to ensure reliable performance, fostering customer confidence through transparent and explainable systems.
