Retail Sector Achieves High AI Satisfaction While Healthcare Leads Spending Amidst Implementation Challenges

TLDR: A Lenovo-IDC study, ‘CIO Playbook 2025,’ reveals that the retail sector in EMEA boasts the highest AI satisfaction rate at 96%, despite a moderate adoption pace. In contrast, the healthcare industry leads in AI investment with a projected 169% spending increase by 2025 but faces the lowest adoption rates and significant implementation challenges, possibly due to a lack of internal expertise. The Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) sector adopts a cautious approach, showing high success rates when AI is aligned with clear operational needs.

Research conducted by Lenovo, in partnership with IDC, for their ‘CIO Playbook 2025’ study, has uncovered notable disparities in artificial intelligence (AI) satisfaction and investment strategies across the retail, finance, and healthcare sectors within the EMEA region. The comprehensive study, which surveyed 620 IT decision-makers across nine markets in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa during November 2024, highlights the varied stages of AI adoption and success rates across industries.

Retail and Finance Approaches

The retail sector emerges as a leader in AI satisfaction, with an impressive 96% of its AI deployments either meeting or surpassing expectations. This figure represents the highest combined satisfaction score among all industries surveyed. Despite this high satisfaction, the retail sector maintains a moderate approach to AI adoption, with 61% of organizations currently engaged in piloting AI projects. The projected spending growth for AI in retail is anticipated at 97%, which is considered below-average compared to other sectors.

Conversely, the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) industry demonstrates a notably cautious stance on AI integration. Only 7% of BFSI organizations have adopted AI to date, and a mere 38% of their anticipated future AI budgets for 2025 are allocated to generative AI, marking the lowest proportion across all sectors. This measured strategy, however, appears to yield positive outcomes, with BFSI organizations reporting that 33% of their AI projects have exceeded expectations—the highest rate in the study. This success is attributed to AI deployments being well-aligned with clearly defined operational needs and workloads.

Healthcare’s Rapid Investment and Challenges

The healthcare industry is distinguished by its aggressive pursuit of AI investment, projecting a spending increase of 169% over 2025, the fastest rate among all sectors. Despite this substantial financial commitment, healthcare reports the lowest rate of AI adoption. Furthermore, a significant proportion of organizations in this sector indicate that their AI implementations have fallen short of expectations.

The study suggests that this performance gap in healthcare may stem from a deficit in internal expertise or a lack of a well-defined strategy for deploying AI within medical settings. This highlights a critical need for increased external support and meticulous planning to ensure effective and successful AI rollouts in the healthcare sector.

Sector-Specific Journeys

Simone Larsson, Head of Enterprise AI at Lenovo, emphasized the diverse nature of AI deployment, stating, “These findings confirm that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to AI. Whether businesses are looking to take a bold leap with AI, or a more measured step-by-step approach, every industry faces unique challenges and opportunities. Regardless of these factors, identification of business challenges and opportunity areas followed by the development of a robust plan provides a foundation on which to build a successful AI deployment.”
