The collaboration, announced on July 8, 2025, will launch the ‘National Academy for AI Instruction,’ a comprehensive initiative designed to empower educators with the skills to harness AI technology responsibly in the classroom.
The ambitious five-year project is backed by a substantial $23 million investment from the tech giants. Microsoft is contributing $12.5 million, OpenAI is providing $10 million, and Anthropic will contribute $500,000 in the first year. This funding underscores a shared commitment to integrating AI into the educational framework in a manner that supports, rather than supplants, human instruction.
The primary goal of the National Academy for AI Instruction is to train approximately 400,000 teachers, representing about 10% of the U.S. teaching workforce, over the next five years. The program will offer free virtual training to all 1.8 million AFT members, starting with K-12 educators. The curriculum, developed by a blend of AI experts and experienced educators, will encompass workshops, flexible online courses, and practical, hands-on training sessions. Participants will also gain priority access to OpenAI tools, technical support, and resources for developing custom AI classroom applications.
Randi Weingarten, President of the AFT, emphasized the union’s proactive stance on AI. “Teachers are facing huge challenges, which include navigating AI wisely, ethically and safely,” Weingarten stated during a press conference. She added, “The direct connection between a teacher and their kids can never be replaced by new technologies, but if we learn how to harness it, set commonsense guardrails and put teachers in the driver’s seat, teaching and learning can be enhanced.”
Brad Smith, Vice Chair and President of Microsoft, echoed this sentiment, stating, “To best serve students, we must ensure teachers have a strong voice in the development and use of AI. The first training center for the academy is currently being established at the United Federation of Teachers’ (UFT) facility in Manhattan, New York, with courses set to begin this fall. The UFT, an AFT affiliate, represents approximately 200,000 New York teachers. Plans are also in motion to establish additional training hubs across the U.S. by 2030, ensuring broader regional coverage and accessibility, with a particular emphasis on supporting underserved school districts.
