KPMG Survey Highlights Gen Z’s Pragmatic Approach to AI and Career Development

TLDR: A recent KPMG Intern Pulse Survey reveals that Gen Z professionals are eager to embrace AI in their careers while simultaneously seeking traditional career stability and opportunities for long-term growth. The survey debunks the ‘lazy Gen Z’ stereotype, showing a generation committed to investing time in their first jobs and valuing in-person interaction and soft skills training alongside AI proficiency.

A comprehensive survey conducted by KPMG among its interns sheds light on Gen Z’s nuanced perspective on the future of work, particularly concerning the integration of artificial intelligence. The ‘KPMG Intern Pulse Survey’ indicates that this emerging workforce generation is not only ready for AI-enhanced jobs but also keen on investing significant time in their initial roles to build foundational skills for a career shaped by technology. This finding challenges prevailing stereotypes about Gen Z’s work ethic and commitment.

The survey, which polled 433 interns across KPMG’s tax, audit, and advisory service lines, highlights a strong desire among Gen Z for a positive working environment that offers clear pathways for advancement. A significant majority, 90% of respondents, believe the biggest misconception about their generation is that they are lazy and unwilling to work hard. This sentiment is reinforced by their career aspirations: 34% plan to stay with their first employer for over five years, and an additional 24% for two to five years, indicating a preference for stability and long-term skill development over frequent job hopping.

AI’s role in their professional lives is a central theme. Nearly half (48%) of the interns anticipate that 20% of their future full-time job will be automated by AI. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, Gen Z is actively embracing generative AI, both personally and professionally. The availability of AI-related training is a crucial factor for 72% of respondents when considering potential employers. Furthermore, 51% are already using generative AI for work-related purposes, including administrative and project-based tasks, with 39% frequently using tools like ChatGPT.

KPMG’s U.S. Chair and CEO, Paul Knopp, emphasized this dual ambition, stating, ‘Gen Z talent expects AI to shape their careers and are already engaging with the technology in both their personal and professional lives. Employers should meet them where they are to ensure AI-related trainings and tools impact their productivity, creativity and ability to balance work and and life.’

Beyond AI, the survey underscores Gen Z’s valuation of ‘soft skills’ and in-person engagement. A substantial 89% agree that access to training in professional skills such as presentation, executive presence, and client etiquette is important. While 82% believe a hybrid work model offers the most growth opportunities, only 4% favor fully remote work, suggesting a strong desire for in-person collaboration and mentorship. This generation also prioritizes long-term financial goals, with home ownership being a top aspiration, and 65% valuing career advancement over leisure in the early stages of their careers.
