Kong Insomnia 12 Integrates AI for Smarter API Testing and Collaboration

TLDR: Kong has announced the upcoming release of Insomnia 12, introducing an ‘AI trust layer’ for developers. This new version features AI-powered commit generation for more descriptive Git messages, a new Microservices Control Plane (MCP) Client for validating MCP servers, and the capability to generate comprehensive mock servers from natural language, URLs, or OpenAPI Specifications. These enhancements are designed to streamline API and MCP development, mitigate dependency bottlenecks, and foster improved collaboration among development teams.

Kong Inc. recently unveiled Insomnia 12, a significant update to its popular API design and testing platform, during the API Summit 2025. This release is strategically focused on embedding an ‘AI trust layer’ directly into developer workflows, aiming to enhance efficiency, reliability, predictability, and collaboration in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI connectivity and agentic architectures.

The core of Insomnia 12’s new capabilities revolves around artificial intelligence and Microservices Control Plane (MCP) tools. A standout feature is the introduction of AI-powered commit generation. This innovative tool suggests logical and descriptive commit messages, ensuring that Git history remains clean, transparent, and easily understandable, thereby improving code traceability and team coordination.

Furthermore, Insomnia 12 includes a new MCP Client, which is described as a critical component for validating MCP servers. This tool is designed to proactively prevent failures in agentic workflows, a growing concern as organizations increasingly adopt AI agents for complex tasks. The emphasis on MCP tools aligns with Kong’s broader vision of providing a unified platform for managing converged AI and traditional API traffic.

Another key enhancement is the ability for developers to generate complete mock servers effortlessly. This can be done using natural language prompts, a URL, or an OpenAPI Specification. This functionality is expected to drastically reduce dependency bottlenecks during development, allowing teams more time to focus on building and innovating rather than waiting for backend services.

This release comes amidst a broader strategic push by Kong to define and lead the ‘AI connectivity’ category. As highlighted by Augusto Marietti, CEO and Co-Founder of Kong, at the API Summit 2025, APIs are becoming the ‘neural pathways of this new AI world,’ necessitating a unified approach to manage, secure, and govern all traffic sources. Rupesh Papneja, Principal Engineer at PEXA, echoed this sentiment, stating, ‘To build AI agents that do real work, you need the right platform; Kong Konnect and Insomnia gave us that.’

Insomnia 12 is part of a suite of announcements from Kong aimed at supporting the ‘agentic era.’ This includes the Kong AI Gateway 3.12, which powers the enterprise MCP Gateway to address challenges like server sprawl and security, and the new KAi, an agentic AI platform co-pilot for Kong Konnect designed to automate governance and accelerate debugging. The open-sourcing of the Volcano SDK also simplifies the development of production-ready AI agents that integrate LLMs with real-world tools via MCP. These collective innovations underscore Kong’s commitment to equipping developers with advanced tools to navigate the complexities of AI-driven microservices and API ecosystems.
