Klarna Embraces Google’s Agent Payments Protocol to Power AI-Driven Commerce

TLDR: Fintech giant Klarna has announced its support for Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2), an open standard designed to facilitate secure, AI-driven payments in digital environments. This strategic move aims to enable ‘agent-led commerce,’ where artificial intelligence assistants will play a central role in initiating and managing transactions, further integrating Klarna’s flexible payment solutions into the evolving landscape of AI-powered shopping.

NEW YORK – Klarna, the global digital bank and flexible payments provider, officially announced on Monday, October 13, 2025, its commitment to supporting Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2). This initiative marks a significant step towards the future of commerce, focusing on secure, AI-driven transactions within digital ecosystems.

AP2 is an open standard specifically engineered to enable ‘agent-led commerce,’ a paradigm where artificial intelligence assistants will be capable of initiating or facilitating purchases without direct human intervention. This collaboration deepens Klarna’s existing relationship with Google, which already includes integrations with Google Pay, Chrome’s autofill feature, and various other Google platforms.

Klarna’s participation will extend its robust payment infrastructure, encompassing real-time underwriting and a suite of flexible payment options—from debit to interest-free installments and longer-term plans—to these emerging AI commerce channels. This integration is poised to ensure consistent and transparent payment experiences, regardless of whether consumers are directly interacting with a platform or delegating transaction duties to AI agents.

David Sykes, Chief Commercial Officer at Klarna, emphasized the transformative potential of this development, stating, “Agent-led commerce represents an exciting new frontier, one that demands transparency, trust, and smarter payment experiences.” He further added, “We’re doubling down on our long-standing relationship with Google to support their work with AP2 and help define an open, responsible payments architecture for the future of shopping.”

Stavan Parikh, VP/GM of Payments at Google, underscored the critical importance of cross-industry collaboration in establishing secure and reliable frameworks for the commerce models of tomorrow.

Klarna, a Swedish fintech powerhouse, boasts a substantial global footprint, serving over 111 million active users and processing an impressive 2.9 million transactions daily. The company maintains a strong financial position with a market capitalization of $14.63 billion and a current ratio of 17.82, indicative of robust liquidity. Over the past twelve months, Klarna has demonstrated significant growth, with revenue increasing by 19.78%.
