During a public lecture delivered at the Indonesian Education Institute (IPI) in Garut, West Java, on Saturday, September 20, 2025, Minister Yuliarto articulated a vision for higher education institutions to evolve beyond traditional teaching and learning centers into dynamic hubs for addressing real-world problems and accelerating national progress.
Minister Yuliarto emphasized that universities must be recognized as strategic partners by local governments, industries, and communities. He stated, “Universities are more than just centers of teaching and learning—they are hubs for solving challenges. Their research and innovation must contribute directly to national development.” This directive underscores a shift towards a more impactful and engaged role for academia in the country’s development agenda.
The Minister specifically urged universities to accelerate the downstreaming of research, particularly in critical sectors such as food, agriculture, and energy, to generate added economic value. Furthermore, he encouraged campuses to take a leading role in waste management initiatives, aiming to foster cleaner and more sustainable communities across the archipelago.
Addressing the broader global landscape, Minister Yuliarto stressed the indispensable role of mastering science and technology. He noted that this mastery is crucial for navigating contemporary global challenges, which include the complexities of Industry 4.0, the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence, and evolving geopolitical dynamics. He reiterated, “Universities must not limit themselves to education. They must contribute through research, innovation, and community service, making real impacts at both regional and national levels.”

He remarked, “Universities should not only produce graduates—they must serve as engines of change and offer concrete solutions to social, economic, and environmental issues.” This initiative is part of a broader effort to align higher education with the Asta Cita development vision, which aims to cultivate a generation of skilled, socially responsive, and innovative citizens.
