Washington DC [US], November 9 (ANI): India’s Ambassador to the United States, Vinay Mohan Kwatra, recently engaged in a productive discussion with Lip Bu Tan, the CEO of Intel, focusing on the development of India’s burgeoning semiconductor and Artificial Intelligence (AI) industries. The meeting underscored Intel’s commitment and strategic plans for its operations in India, aligning with the Indian government’s ambitious goals.
Ambassador Kwatra shared insights from the interaction on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Had the pleasure to interact with Mr. Lip Bu Tan, CEO of INTEL to discuss INTEL’s initiatives and plans for India operations in coordination with the Government’s goal to develop semiconductor and AI industry in India under the aegis of India Semiconductor Mission and India AI Mission.”
This high-level discussion comes amidst significant governmental push to bolster India’s technological self-reliance and global standing. The Union Cabinet had previously approved the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) in 2021, allocating a substantial outlay of Rs 76,000 crore to catalyze fabrication, design, and manufacturing capabilities within the country. This initiative has already shown tangible results, with India inaugurating its first centers for advanced 3-nanometer chip design in Noida and Bengaluru in 2025. Furthermore, the Global Investors Summit 2025 announced that India’s first indigenous semiconductor chip is slated for production this year, with five production units currently under construction, marking a pivotal moment for domestic technological prowess.

In parallel, the IndiaAI Mission, approved in March 2024 with a budget of Rs 10,371.92 crore over five years, is guided by the vision of “Making AI in India and Making AI Work for India.” This mission is designed to position India as a global leader in Artificial Intelligence. Since its inception, the mission has made remarkable progress in expanding the country’s computing infrastructure, significantly increasing its GPU capacity from an initial target of 10,000 to an impressive 38,000 GPUs, thereby providing affordable access to world-class AI resources. The IndiaAI Mission is structured around seven key pillars, including the India AI compute pillar, AIKosh, India AI application development initiative, and India AI future skills, all aimed at fostering a comprehensive AI ecosystem.
