Recent reports indicate that India holds the second position globally in Generative AI adoption, trailing only the United States. This strong performance is notably driven by the country’s extensive use of AI in content editing and educational tools.
According to a SimilarWeb report titled ‘Gen AI in Consumer Applications,’ India accounts for a substantial 12% of global AI usage in content editing, underscoring its pivotal role in AI-driven content creation. Furthermore, India ranks third worldwide in the utilization of AI for productivity tools and in the education sector, with a growing number of users leveraging AI platforms to enhance efficiency and learning experiences. The report highlights that India maintains over a 10% share in several AI use cases, indicating a broad and active user base across various applications.
Despite this impressive overall adoption, the report also points out an area for potential growth: AI-powered companion applications. Indian audiences have shown a slower rate of adoption for these personal assistant apps. This suggests an opportunity for developers to introduce localized solutions coupled with more effective monetization strategies to attract and engage a larger user base in this segment.
Beyond consumer applications, India’s commitment to AI innovation is evident in its corporate landscape. A NetApp Cloud Complexity Report revealed that India leads globally in the implementation of AI projects, with a remarkable 70% of companies having operational or ongoing AI initiatives. This stands in stark contrast to the worldwide average of 49%. The report further predicts that by 2024, a significant 91% of Indian companies will utilize at least half of their data to train AI models. Vinod Nair, President of Noventiq India, expressed enthusiasm for this trend, stating, ‘We are excited by the significant AI adoption in India, as highlighted in the report. This underscores India’s dedication to technological innovation.’
Anand Mahurkar, Founder & CEO of Findability Sciences, emphasized the importance of unified data infrastructure for AI success, noting that ‘Indian companies have significant advantages by using cloud infrastructure effectively in comparison with the global organisations; and that has ensured collection and unification of data remains the center of their IT strategies.’

Data from online learning platform Coursera indicates that while India ranks second globally in Generative AI enrollments among women learners, women constitute only 29.6% of total GenAI enrollments in the country, despite representing 40% of all learners on the platform. This highlights a need for targeted interventions to ensure broader and more inclusive access to Generative AI opportunities.
