India’s Generative AI Startup Ecosystem Experiences Significant Growth and Funding Surge in Early 2025

TLDR: A recent NASSCOM report reveals that India’s generative AI startup landscape has seen a remarkable 3.7-fold growth, reaching over 890 startups by the first half of 2025. Concurrently, cumulative funding for these startups has climbed to $990 million, marking a 30% year-on-year increase, positioning India as a burgeoning hub for AI innovation.

India’s generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) startup ecosystem is undergoing a significant transformation, marked by substantial growth in both the number of ventures and investment, according to a report by NASSCOM. By the first half of calendar year 2025 (H1 CY2025), the cumulative number of GenAI startups in India has surged by 3.7 times, now exceeding 890 enterprises. Within this burgeoning sector, GenAI application-focused startups have demonstrated even more rapid expansion, growing fourfold to surpass 740, which accounts for approximately 83% of the total GenAI startup landscape.

Financially, the sector has attracted considerable capital, with cumulative funding reaching $990 million by H1 CY2025. This represents a robust 30% increase year-on-year, underscoring growing investor confidence and the strategic importance of AI in the Indian market. Despite this impressive growth, the report notes that India’s funding figures still lag behind global peers, indicating further potential for investment.

A defining characteristic of the Indian GenAI landscape has been the trend of ‘pivoting,’ with 63% of startups re-evaluating and shifting their business models or focus over the past year. This strategic realignment has largely been directed towards vertical Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) and application-centric models. This trend highlights India’s emerging role as a hub for specialized AI solutions, particularly for startups addressing domain-specific challenges within regulated industries, which have attracted the largest funding rounds.
