Incidents range from tragic elephant electrocutions in Odisha and leopards falling victim to speeding vehicles in Mumbai, to a surge in stray dog-related issues in urban centers. As cities expand and natural habitats shrink, both wild and domestic animals are increasingly caught in the crossfire, making human-animal conflict one of India’s most pressing developmental dilemmas.
The Mumbai hackathon, convened by global ‘tech-for-good’ pioneers Electric Sheep and OpenPaws, with support from organizations including ProVeg, Craigslist CF, Mobius, and the Bharat Accountability Initiative, marked a quiet but profound shift. Unlike conventional hackathons focused on commercial gain or competitive funding, this 24-hour event was dedicated to designing real-world AI tools for animal welfare and environmental justice. Participants collaborated across disciplines and ideologies, developing AI-driven prototypes in direct response to live problem statements submitted by NGOs, grassroots rescuers, and citizen-led animal welfare movements.
Among the solutions developed were systems capable of scanning cruelty complaints and categorizing urgent cases for immediate rescue coordination, and machine learning tools designed to monitor regulatory filings and flag violations in industries such as meat processing and dairy. This focus on practical, frontline tools underscores a different kind of innovation, prioritizing genuine impact over accolades.
