TLDR: A new report by Canva, ‘State of Visual Communication Report,’ highlights that 78% of Gen Z professionals in India are keen to explore AI tools to enhance their visual workflows. The study uncovers a significant gap between Gen Z’s preference for visual-first communication and current traditional corporate operations, leading to widespread use of unapproved AI tools and calls for businesses to adapt to evolving communication styles.
A recent comprehensive study by Canva, titled ‘State of Visual Communication Report,’ reveals a compelling trend among India’s Gen Z workforce: a strong desire to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) into their daily professional lives. The report indicates that a significant 78% of Gen Z professionals in India are eager for more opportunities to experiment with AI tools, particularly to enhance their visual workflows. This enthusiasm underscores a growing disconnect between how this digitally native generation prefers to work and the more traditional operational structures prevalent in many companies today.
The study, conducted in partnership with The Harris Poll and Neuro-Insight, surveyed 2,475 business leaders and Gen Z professionals across various countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Japan, India, France, Germany, and Spain. The findings highlight that visual communication is no longer a niche skill but a critical component of workplace efficiency and engagement.
Key insights from the report emphasize Gen Z’s visual-first approach: 94% of Indian Gen Z professionals believe they perform their best work visually. Furthermore, 93% consider strong visual communication skills essential for future-proofing their careers, and 69% advocate for their companies to adopt a visual-first strategy. This preference is not merely anecdotal; a groundbreaking neuroscience component of the study, utilizing Steady State Topography (SST) to track real-time brain activity, provided scientific backing. It demonstrated that high-quality visual content triggers 74% faster memory encoding, 26% greater emotional intensity in response to documents, and 21% greater emotional intensity in presentations compared to text-heavy alternatives. Conversely, 76% of professionals reported losing interest in text-heavy content.
Despite this clear preference and the proven benefits, the report identifies significant barriers. A staggering 90% of survey respondents, including those in India, feel their creativity is stifled by unhelpful or inadequate AI tools. This frustration leads to a concerning trend: 91% of Gen Z professionals and 84% of their managers admit to using unapproved AI tools to complete their creative tasks. The current workplace environment also sees teams juggling an average of 11 to 12 different platforms weekly just to execute visual projects, while only 22% of organizations globally identify as ‘design-led.’
Chandrika Deb, India country manager at Canva, emphasized the urgency of this shift. “In workplaces across India, where multiple generations collaborate side by side, embracing visual communication and experimentation with AI can bridge gaps in workflows and turn creativity into a strategic advantage,” Deb stated. She added, “Our research shows that when companies embrace a visual-first approach, they don’t just boost productivity, they also unlock creativity and attract the next generation of talent. Leaders who lean into this shift will not only keep pace but set the benchmark for innovation.”
