TLDR: Indian IT companies and startups are rapidly embracing agentic AI, with a Deloitte report indicating that over 80% of Indian enterprises are exploring this technology. Nearly half are prioritizing multi-agent collaboration, signaling a significant shift towards autonomous AI systems.
Indian IT giants and emerging startups are at the forefront of a rapid deployment of agentic AI across their workflows, marking a significant technological shift. A recent Deloitte report, specifically the ‘State of GenAI (Fourth Wave) report’ with an India-specific perspective, highlights this accelerating trend. The report reveals that a substantial 80% of Indian organizations are actively exploring the development of autonomous agents, indicating a profound move towards Agentic AI.
Agentic AI refers to advanced AI systems capable of acting independently to achieve specific goals without continuous human intervention, thereby automating complex tasks and processes. This growing interest underscores a major transformation in how Indian enterprises are leveraging AI for enhanced innovation and operational efficiency.
A key finding from the Deloitte report is the increasing focus on multi-agent collaboration. Approximately 50% of Indian businesses have identified these multi-agent workflows as a critical priority area. In such setups, sub-agents work collaboratively under the supervision of a master agent to execute goal-oriented actions, enabling dynamic and end-to-end automation.
The impact of Generative AI (GenAI) and agentic AI workflows is already yielding significant benefits at scale for Indian businesses. The report indicates that over 67% of firms have observed a positive effect of GenAI across all phases of the software development lifecycle. Furthermore, nearly 70% of respondents reported that their AI integration efforts either met or surpassed their projected return on investment (ROI) estimates.
Critical departments such as IT, customer service, marketing, operations, and product development are leading the charge in AI adoption as organizations advance in their AI maturity. This widespread exploration and adoption are transforming various sectors, from finance and HR to IT and supply chain, through solutions like Deloitte’s recently announced ‘Agentic GBS’ in partnership with UiPath. This collaboration aims to deliver context-aware, scalable solutions that enhance operational resilience and accelerate intelligent transformation by moving from task automation to intelligent orchestration.

Despite the rapid progress, challenges persist. The report notes concerns regarding errors (36%), bias and hallucinations (30%), and data quality (30%), which continue to impede large-scale deployment. Additionally, the preference for off-the-shelf AI tools, chosen by most organizations for quick integration, raises concerns about limited customization and potential obsolescence, with 28% of firms fearing their current solutions might become outdated within two years. Addressing these challenges through robust governance and agile innovation approaches will be crucial for sustained AI investment and growth in India.
