Mumbai, India – October 13, 2025 – A groundbreaking report titled ‘The Zero Office: Reinventing the Banking Back Office as a Growth Engine,’ published by Iron Mountain (NYSE: IRM) in collaboration with HFS Research, reveals a transformative outlook for the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) sector in India. The study, which surveyed over 500 senior executives across seven countries including India, projects that AI agents are poised to take over a substantial portion of routine back-office tasks.
Key findings specific to India indicate a strong consensus among BFSI leaders regarding the impending AI-driven revolution. A striking 57% of respondents believe that AI agents will soon autonomously manage more than 75% of routine back-office operations. This sentiment is underscored by an overwhelming 83% who strongly agree that companies failing to digitize their back-office now risk permanently losing their competitive edge.
The report further highlights the rapid pace of change, with half of the executives strongly agreeing that the traditional back-office, as it is known today, will cease to exist within the next three years. Approximately 37% of respondents anticipate large-scale transformation within their organizations within one to two years, reflecting an urgent drive towards modernization. The adoption of technology is already well underway, with 58% reporting enterprise-wide implementation.
Investment in digital transformation is also a significant focus. The report states that 23% of Indian BFSI organizations are planning to invest between $10 million and $25 million in digital back-office transformation over the next 24 months, while an additional 21% are prepared to spend more than $50 million. Regarding the execution of these transformations, 38% of respondents indicated a complete reliance on third-party consultants and vendors for back-office operations. However, a balanced perspective emerged, with 50% believing that successful transformation will be a joint effort between their internal teams and preferred vendors. The report emphasizes that in an era defined by AI disruption, tighter regulations, and relentless pressure for efficiency, the BFSI back office is no longer merely a support function but has evolved into ‘the engine of resilience, trust, and growth.’ The findings collectively illustrate how BFSI organizations are actively modernizing their back-office operations through automation, predictive compliance, and scalable modular workflows.
