India Poised to Lead Global Developer Landscape by 2030, Driven by AI Adoption, GitHub Reports

TLDR: GitHub’s 2025 Octoverse Report projects India will become the world’s largest developer community by 2030, surpassing the US with over 57.5 million developers. This rapid growth, fueled by AI tools like GitHub Copilot and increased internet access, has also seen India become the top open-source contributor globally.

According to the 2025 GitHub Octoverse Report, India is on track to become the world’s largest developer community by 2030, with projections indicating over 57.5 million developers. This significant growth will see India surpass the United States, accounting for more than one in three of all new global sign-ups within the next five years.

As of October 2025, India already boasts approximately 21.9 million developers on the GitHub platform, securing its position as the second-largest developer base globally, just behind the US. The country’s developer ecosystem is expanding at an unprecedented rate, having added 5.2 million new developers in the past year alone. This represents a remarkable 31 percent annual growth rate and constitutes 14 percent of all new developers worldwide, making India the fastest-growing developer community.

A key driver behind this surge is the transformative impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) on coding practices. AI-assisted tools, particularly GitHub Copilot, are playing a pivotal role. The report highlights that nearly 80 percent of new developers in India are utilizing Copilot within their first week, indicating a rapid integration of AI into the country’s programming culture. Kyle Daigle, Chief Operating Officer at GitHub, emphasized this, stating, “India’s rise as a global technology leader is undeniable, driven by its surging developer community and the new possibilities of agentic AI. It is expanding what developers can do, accelerating how fast they ship, and empowering millions more in India to begin their software development journey.” Daigle further added, “Software is the world’s most valuable export, and India’s developer community is at the heart of that story—building the future of technology for all of us.”

Beyond sheer numbers, India’s influence is also growing in the open-source domain. The country has now surpassed the US to become the world’s largest base of open-source contributors. Furthermore, India ranks second globally in contributions to open-source and AI repositories, as well as in GitHub Education users. This momentum, coupled with expanding internet access, underscores a broader shift in the global software development landscape, with the ‘center of gravity’ for new developers moving towards high-growth markets like India. GitHub’s global community has now exceeded 180 million developers, with India’s contributions being a significant factor in this expansion.
