TLDR: Global professional services company Accenture has announced the layoff of over 11,000 employees in the past quarter, attributing the significant workforce reduction to a strategic restructuring program heavily influenced by advancements in artificial intelligence and evolving client demands. The company is simultaneously investing in upskilling its remaining workforce in AI technologies and plans to hire for AI-focused roles.
Accenture, a leading global professional services company, has confirmed a substantial reduction in its workforce, with over 11,000 employees laid off in the past three months. This move is part of a broader, AI-focused restructuring program designed to adapt to the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence and shifting client needs in the consulting industry.
The layoffs, which saw the company’s global headcount decrease from 791,000 to 779,000, are a direct consequence of Accenture’s strategic pivot towards AI-driven services. The company has indicated that the decision to part ways with these employees stems from an inability to retrain certain segments of its workforce with the necessary AI skills.
CEO Julie Sweet provided insights into the restructuring, stating, “We are exiting on a compressed timeline people where reskilling, based on our experience, is not a viable path for the skills we need. We are investing in upskilling our reinventors, which is our primary strategy. Those we cannot reskill will be exited.” She further elaborated that the decision was prompted by the rapid adoption of artificial intelligence and a declining demand for conventional consulting services.
Financially, the restructuring program involves an investment of $865 million for the year ahead, aimed at improving overall efficiency within the company. Additionally, Accenture has reportedly spent over $2 billion on severance costs in recent years as part of its business optimization efforts.
Despite the significant layoffs, Accenture is actively investing in its future workforce. The company plans to upskill approximately 70,000 employees in AI technologies to meet evolving client demands. This commitment to AI is further underscored by strategic acquisitions, such as that of Aidemy Inc., a reskilling specialist, to strengthen its own reskilling and learning services like LearnVantage. Accenture anticipates that its overall workforce will grow in line with the future of digital and AI consulting, with plans for increased hiring in these targeted areas.
