Indeed Index Reveals Jobs Most and Least Susceptible to Generative AI Transformation

TLDR: A new index from Indeed, discussed by CEO Chris Hyams, identifies knowledge-based roles such as software development, finance, and legal professions as having the highest exposure to generative AI. The study, which analyzed 2,800 distinct skills, indicates that while no job will be entirely replaced, tasks within nearly every role will be restructured. Despite widespread AI adoption, explicit mentions of generative AI in job postings remain low, primarily appearing in roles focused on developing AI technology itself.

A recent comprehensive study by Indeed, highlighted by CEO Chris Hyams in a January 2025 discussion, sheds light on which jobs are most and least likely to be transformed by generative artificial intelligence. The index, which meticulously assessed 2,800 distinct skills across various occupations, reveals that knowledge-based professions are at the forefront of this technological shift.

According to Hyams, “there’s really no skill that generative AI can completely replace as a human.” However, the study found that “certain jobs that have a much higher concentration of those skills that generative AI can perform.” The top categories with the highest exposure to generative AI include software development, finance, and legal professions. These roles, characterized by extensive knowledge work, are expected to see significant restructuring of tasks rather than outright replacement.

Brendon Bernard, a senior economist at Indeed, further elaborated on the current landscape in a February 2025 report. He noted that, counterintuitively, less than 1% of job listings explicitly mention generative AI. The surge in job postings related to generative AI is predominantly observed in positions focused on developing the technology itself, such as machine learning engineering, data science, and advanced mathematics. Conversely, traditional white-collar jobs like accounting, sales, or administrative assistance have yet to see widespread explicit requirements for GenAI experience in their job descriptions.

This trend suggests that while generative AI is rapidly integrating into daily workflows, businesses are still in the early stages of redefining core job tasks around the technology. Bernard indicated that this adoption has been “more around the margins” rather than fundamentally disrupting workflows to the point where proficiency in GenAI is a paramount requirement for job seekers in many sectors.

The broader impact of AI on the job market is also becoming increasingly evident. Reports from September 2025 indicate that generative AI is projected to significantly reduce the corporate workforce in the coming years, with entry-level positions being particularly vulnerable. This is largely due to the repetitive, administrative, and digital nature of many entry-level tasks, which AI can learn and perform efficiently. This shift is contributing to a growing trend, observed among Gen Z, of pivoting towards blue-collar and trade jobs, which are perceived as more stable and less susceptible to AI automation.

While AI is poised to destroy and rearrange many jobs, it is also expected to create new ones, a pattern consistent with previous technological revolutions. The key for individuals and companies will be adaptability and a willingness to restructure work processes to leverage AI effectively.
