TLDR: Nigeria’s Imo State has launched ImoTalentHub.com, a digital marketplace developed in collaboration with the University of California, Berkeley, and the US Market Access Centre. This initiative, a core component of the state’s ‘Skill Up Imo’ program, seeks to connect 100,000 Imo-trained technology professionals with global employers by 2026. The platform streamlines international hiring, offering verified profiles and smart contracts, and builds on the success of training over 40,000 youths in cutting-edge tech skills since 2022.
Imo State, located in southeastern Nigeria, has taken a significant stride towards becoming a global technology hub with the official launch of ImoTalentHub.com. This innovative digital marketplace is the result of a strategic partnership with the University of California, Berkeley, and the US Market Access Centre, designed to bridge the gap between skilled Nigerian tech professionals and international employment opportunities.
The primary objective of ImoTalentHub is ambitious yet clear: to facilitate the placement of 100,000 Imo-trained technology professionals into paid roles within the global economy by the year 2026. This initiative is a central pillar of the state-run ‘Skill Up Imo’ program, which commenced in 2022.
Since its inception, the ‘Skill Up Imo’ program has successfully trained over 40,000 young individuals through year-long courses in high-demand technological fields, including software development, artificial intelligence (AI), cybersecurity, and user-experience (UX) design. The newly launched ImoTalentHub.com now provides these graduates with verified professional profiles, showcases of their portfolios, and ‘one-click smart contracts’ that efficiently handle Know Your Customer (KYC) checks, escrow payments, and tax compliance. This streamlined process aims to make it as straightforward for an international firm, such as a fintech company in Shoreditch, to hire a back-end engineer from Owerri as it would be to recruit locally, with payments facilitated through regulated channels in various currencies.
Governor Hope Uzodimma views this groundbreaking initiative as a decisive pivot away from a traditional resource-based economy, signaling a future driven by knowledge and innovation. Dr. Chimezie Amadi, the Commissioner for Digital Economy and E-Government, emphasized the broader impact, stating that ‘data generated by the hub will inform smarter policy, stimulate foreign earnings and demonstrate Nigeria’s capacity to export high-value knowledge at scale.’ Chris Burry, Managing Director of the US Market Access Centre, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the transformative potential of the partnership.
The curriculum for current cohorts within the ‘Skill Up Imo’ program has been meticulously designed in collaboration with the Sutardja Centre for Entrepreneurship and Technology at UC Berkeley. Professors from the institution have delivered intensive boot camps and are slated to lead further sessions focusing on building for global markets, prompt engineering, ‘vibe coding,’ and the practical application of generative AI. Furthermore, cloud laboratories at the new Imo Digital City campus are being equipped with NVIDIA GPU power, and a Founder Development Programme is being launched to provide venture-capital access alongside formal certification, preparing graduates with enterprise-ready skills and a direct pathway into Imo’s burgeoning start-up ecosystem.

Beyond the immediate goal of 100,000 placements, the broader ‘Skill Up Imo’ project aims to train 300,000 Imolites over three years, with a target of connecting 60% of graduates to high-paying jobs and empowering the remaining 40% to become tech entrepreneurs and launch their own companies. This comprehensive approach, coupled with the ‘Imo Digital City’ initiative, positions Imo State to become a leading digital hub in Africa, attracting international investment and fostering a vibrant ecosystem for technological innovation.
