ICAI’s Vision 2047: Charting a Future for Chartered Accountants with AI Integration and Workforce Expansion

TLDR: The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has unveiled an ambitious roadmap to significantly expand the number of Chartered Accountants to 30 lakh by 2047, while simultaneously integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) into the profession. This strategic vision includes extensive AI training for CAs and robust support for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across India.

Mumbai, India – The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has announced a transformative vision for the future of the chartered accountancy profession in India, aiming to increase the number of CAs to an impressive 30 lakh by the year 2047. This ambitious roadmap, unveiled during the MSME & Startup Conclave 2025 in Mumbai, emphasizes the critical integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and comprehensive support for the nation’s burgeoning Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises.

Addressing the conclave, ICAI President CA. Charanjot Singh Nanda highlighted the pressing need for this expansion. Currently, India has approximately 5 lakh Chartered Accountants serving a population of 140 crore, underscoring a significant demand-supply gap. The institute’s strategic goal to reach 30 lakh CAs by 2047 is designed to meet the evolving demands of India’s dynamic economy and ensure robust financial governance across all sectors.

A cornerstone of ICAI’s future strategy is the proactive embrace of Artificial Intelligence. Recognizing the transformative potential of technology, the ICAI has established a dedicated AI committee. Significant strides have already been made in upskilling the existing workforce, with over 16,000 chartered accountants receiving specialized training in AI applications between July 2024 and February 2025. President Nanda emphasized that this training extends to both domestic and foreign chartered accountants, stating, “Artificial intelligence is to support us. It is an enabler. We have the vision to take things forward.” He further clarified that AI is intended to augment human intelligence within the profession, not replace it, positioning CAs as strategic advisors rather than mere number crunchers.

Beyond AI integration, the ICAI is also committed to strengthening the MSME and entrepreneurial ecosystem. The institute plans to establish nationwide MSME clinics to provide essential support. In a significant move to bolster this commitment, ICAI entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) on June 27, 2025. This collaboration focuses on capacity building for MSMEs, entrepreneurship development, and integrated support services encompassing marketing, technology, finance, and global outreach through acceleration programs and events.

To facilitate the entry of qualified professionals into the workforce more swiftly, the ICAI has also revamped its examination system. Previously held twice a year, the changes aim to expedite the qualification process for aspiring CAs.
