Huawei Unveils AI Software to Reduce Reliance on Foreign Memory Chips and Boost Inference Performance

The announcement was made at the 2025 Financial AI Inference Application Implementation and Development Forum on August 12.

The UCM software framework is engineered to accelerate the inference phase of large AI models, a critical process where trained AI models apply their learning to new data. This acceleration is vital for handling the immense data volumes and complex computations characteristic of modern AI workloads. Huawei’s initiative comes at a time when China is actively seeking to enhance its domestic technological capabilities, particularly in the semiconductor sector, in response to U.S. export restrictions and trade tensions.

HBM chips are a cornerstone of advanced AI systems, known for their ultra-high bandwidth, low latency, and energy efficiency. They are essential for preventing data bottlenecks in AI models with hundreds of billions of parameters, allowing Graphics Processing Units (GPUs) to operate at their full potential. Huawei’s new software aims to achieve similar performance efficiencies, potentially reducing the need for these high-cost, often foreign-sourced, memory components.

Reports indicate that one of the nation’s leading DRAM manufacturers has commenced mass production of HBM3 chips using a homegrown 16nm G4 process, with sample shipments already undergoing final verification by Huawei. This dual approach—software optimization and indigenous hardware manufacturing—underscores China’s comprehensive strategy to achieve technological independence in the critical AI domain.
