HKUST Unveils ‘Aivilization’: A Groundbreaking AI Social Simulation with 100,000 Agents

TLDR: The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has launched ‘Aivilization,’ the world’s largest AI multi-agent social simulation platform. This innovative project involves 100,000 AI agents interacting over six weeks, aiming to study human-AI dynamics in a virtual society. It boasts significant advancements in cost-effectiveness, scalability, and complex AI behaviors, allowing for the organic development of AI governance, economies, and cultural norms.

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) has announced the launch of ‘Aivilization,’ a pioneering and unprecedented large-scale AI multi-agent social simulation sandbox. This ambitious platform is designed to explore the intricate dynamics of human interaction with artificial intelligence and its impact on the formation of virtual societies. With an impressive scale, Aivilization involves 100,000 AI agents engaging in complex interactions over a six-week period, making it the largest simulation of its kind to date.

‘Aivilization’ significantly surpasses previous efforts in AI social simulation, such as Project Sid and Stanford Smallville, which featured community sizes of approximately 1,000 and dozens of AI agents, respectively. The project’s core objective is to observe how these ‘AI inhabitants’ organically develop their own governance structures, economies, and cultural norms within a dynamic virtual environment. This initiative also aims to advance AI literacy and encourage citizen science by transforming AI education into an engaging, hands-on gaming experience.

Key innovations underpin Aivilization’s groundbreaking capabilities. The platform achieves remarkable cost-effectiveness, with the operational cost of each AI character reduced to just US$2 per month, representing a more than 95% reduction compared to similar platforms. This efficiency is attributed to an industrial-grade character framework and autonomous model scaling, enabling the system to function as a real-time massive multiplayer online (MMO) environment. The AI agents themselves exhibit sophisticated, near-human capabilities in areas such as production, free trade, socializing, career planning, and lifestyle management. They are capable of generating their own culture and societal structures, mirroring real-world complexities.

Human participants play a crucial role in Aivilization, acting as players who can influence the behavior of these AI agents through personalized guidance. Users can assign MBTI personality types and offer targeted prompts to shape characters’ educational paths, career choices, and social relationships. Early examples from the simulation highlight this potential, with one introverted AI character evolving into a socially active individual and another AI character achieving the status of the ‘richest man’ on the game’s wealth ranking under human guidance.

The development of ‘Aivilization’ was co-led by Professor Chen Kani and PhD student Mr. Yang Haowei. The platform is globally accessible via its dedicated website, ‘https://www.aivilization.ai/’. Furthermore, an HKUST-incubated start-up, Bauhinia AI, has been founded to commercialize this cutting-edge research, applying it to sectors such as gaming, digital economy, social simulation, and market research. HKUST continues to be a leader in AI education, having been the first university in Hong Kong to adopt generative AI and launching the Artificial Intelligence School Education Program in May 2025.
