TLDR: GS Caltex is aggressively pursuing a ‘Digital & AI Transformation (DAX)’ strategy, integrating generative AI across its operations. This includes deploying an AI-based safety regulation chatbot (‘AnGenBot’), optimizing production processes at its Yeosu plant with proprietary AI models, and introducing an internal generative AI platform ‘AIU’ for employees. The company is also enhancing site safety with AI-powered CCTV and drones, and fostering digital talent through its ‘Digital Academy’ to secure a competitive edge in the AI era.
GS Caltex is spearheading a comprehensive ‘Digital & AI Transformation (DAX)’ initiative, aiming to integrate advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies across its business areas. This strategic move is designed to secure a competitive advantage and foster an evolved way of working in the rapidly advancing AI era. The company’s efforts encompass AI-powered safety management, optimized production processes, and the deployment of an internal generative AI platform.
At the forefront of its AI integration, GS Caltex has introduced ‘AnGenBot,’ a generative AI-based chatbot designed to streamline access to safety regulations. This chatbot provides quick and accurate answers to queries based on internal safety procedures and can even identify potential hazards by analyzing uploaded site photos, significantly enhancing preemptive hazard detection. This initiative is part of a broader effort to secure safety at business sites, including the Yeosu plant and Incheon logistics center, where AI-based CCTV and drones are utilized for real-time hazard detection and inspection efficiency. The company has also established virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) experiential safety training facilities, allowing employees to virtually practice procedures and respond to incidents, thereby reinforcing safety awareness and preventing accidents. These efforts were recognized with the grand prize (Minister of Employment and Labor Award) at the ‘2025 AI and Smart Industrial Safety Technology Excellent Case Contest’ for the Incheon logistics center.
In terms of production, GS Caltex has developed its own AI model to optimize processes at its Yeosu plant. This model analyzes real-time process data to predict product specifications and determine optimal operating conditions, leading to increased production of high-value-added products. This shift from relying solely on worker experience to AI-driven anomaly detection and real-time problem-solving is expected to improve profitability through cost reductions and enhanced operational efficiency.
To empower its workforce, GS Caltex launched ‘AIU,’ an integrated generative AI platform, in the first half of this year. Symbolizing the integration of AI with the traditional refining industry (æ²¹ meaning oil), AIU is built on GS Group’s common AX (AI Transformation) platform, ‘MISO.’ It allows employees to safely use various generative AI tools without exposing company data to external services. A key feature of AIU is its intuitive development tools, enabling non-experts to create AI agents—intelligent digital assistants capable of independent judgment and action—with minimal coding. This significantly accelerates application development, reducing creation time from a month for a professional developer to just a week for an employee.
Furthermore, GS Caltex is committed to nurturing digital talent through its ‘Digital Academy,’ launched in 2023. This academy aims to internalize digital capabilities across the workforce, expanding the number of in-house data analysts and low-code developers to approximately 10% of all employees by 2025. This ensures that the DAX is a company-wide transformation, not limited to a few specialists.
