TLDR: Gradient Labs, a startup co-founded by former Monzo engineers, has successfully raised $13 million in Series A funding. The capital will fuel the development and expansion of its specialized AI customer service agents designed for the highly regulated financial services industry, aiming to enhance efficiency and compliance.
Gradient Labs, a burgeoning startup spearheaded by former Monzo engineers, has announced a significant milestone, securing $13 million in Series A funding. This investment propels the company’s mission to revolutionize customer service within the financial sector through advanced AI agents. The funding round, which values the company at $60 million post-raise, was led by prominent US venture firm Redpoint Ventures, with additional participation from LocalGlobe, Puzzle Ventures, Liquid 2 Ventures, and Exceptional Capital.
Founded in 2023 by Dimitri Masin (CEO), Neal Lathia, and Danai Antoniou, Gradient Labs is at the forefront of a new wave of companies leveraging artificial intelligence to deliver customer service solutions. Unlike general AI chatbots, Gradient specializes in creating agents tailored for regulated businesses, with a particular focus on financial services. CEO Dimitri Masin emphasized the stringent requirements of the industry, stating, ‘Financial services have a very low-risk bar on the kind of mistakes they can make.’ To address this, Gradient’s AI agents are engineered with features specific to financial services, such as the ability to identify vulnerable customers who may require human intervention and to prevent the AI from inadvertently providing financial advice.
The company’s business model is based on a percentage fee for each successful outcome completed by its AI agents. This approach has already shown promising results, with Gradient Labs achieving $1 million in annual recurring revenue (ARR) last November. Currently, Gradient works with several European fintech companies, including credit card provider Yonder, roboadvisor Plum, and insurtech Zego, largely leveraging the founders’ extensive network within the European fintech scene.

With this fresh injection of capital, Gradient Labs plans an aggressive expansion into the United States market this year. The company intends to hire a dedicated sales and marketing professional in the US and aims to double its current 20-strong team by the end of the year, further solidifying its position as a key innovator in AI-driven financial customer service.
