TLDR: Google’s experimental AI Overview feature generated a completely fabricated summary of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ mother’s funeral, including false celebrity attendees and a performance by Eminem. The incident, which occurred days before the actual private service, has raised concerns about AI ‘hallucinations’ and the reliability of generative AI tools. Google has acknowledged the error and is working on improving its safeguards.
A recent incident involving Google’s experimental AI Overview feature has sparked significant controversy, as the tool incorrectly generated outlandish and entirely false details regarding the funeral of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ mother, Jacklyn Gise Bezos. The 78-year-old, who had been battling Lewy body dementia for five years since her diagnosis in 2020, passed away on August 14, 2025.
According to reports, Google’s AI-powered summary claimed that the funeral was a star-studded event, attended by prominent figures such as Elon Musk and Oprah Winfrey. It further alleged that rapper Eminem performed his 2005 hit ‘Mockingbird’ and that the eulogy featured a ‘space-themed’ tribute referencing Blue Origin rockets. These sensational details were entirely fabricated and circulated online days before the actual private ceremony took place.
In reality, Jacklyn Gise Bezos’ funeral was a small, intimate service held on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the Caballero Rivero Westchester funeral home in West Miami, Florida. The gathering was attended by fewer than 50 people, primarily family and close friends, including Jeff Bezos, 61, and his wife, Lauren Sanchez, 55, along with his brother Mark and stepfather Mike. The family had sought a private and personal farewell.

This incident has once again brought to the forefront the issue of ‘hallucinations’ in generative AI systems, where AI tools produce plausible-sounding but factually incorrect information. Google has acknowledged the error, stating that its AI Overview feature, which is designed to summarize complex queries, is still in its testing phase. The company has committed to improving its safeguards to prevent such inaccuracies in the future. Following the widespread attention, Google’s AI summary was reportedly revised to accurately reflect the private nature and actual attendees of the funeral.
