TLDR: Google’s AI Mode for Search has received a significant upgrade with the introduction of a specialized AI agent. Initially, this ‘one-trick’ agent is designed to assist users in finding and making restaurant reservations, leveraging partnerships with platforms like OpenTable and Resy. Google plans to expand these agentic capabilities to include local service appointments and event ticket bookings in the near future. The update also enhances personalization within AI Mode, allowing it to tailor search results based on a user’s past interactions and preferences, and has rolled out globally to 180 countries, though it remains English-only. However, recent reports also highlight a concern regarding scammers exploiting AI responses for fraudulent customer service numbers.
Google’s AI Mode for Search, an advanced feature that transforms the search experience into a Gemini-powered chat interface, has been significantly enhanced with new ‘agentic capabilities.’ This update, announced on Thursday, August 21, 2025, introduces a specialized AI agent designed to streamline specific tasks directly within the search environment.
First introduced as an opt-in preview in March and rolled out to general Google users in May, AI Mode allows Gemini to act as a sophisticated sifter of search engine results pages (SERPs), providing users with chatbot-delivered answers to their queries.
Currently, the newly integrated AI agent possesses a singular, focused capability: assisting users with finding and making restaurant reservations. Google has partnered with leading booking platforms such as OpenTable, Resy, and Tock to facilitate this functionality. Early reports indicate that the feature works ‘very well’ in finding available tables, even for popular establishments.
Looking ahead, Google has confirmed plans to expand these agentic capabilities. Future integrations will include assistance with local service appointments and event tickets, with partnerships already established with major players like Ticketmaster, StubHub, SeatGeek, and Booksy. The timeline for these future rollouts remains unspecified.
A key aspect of this update is the deepened personalization within AI Mode. Google stated in its press release that users who have opted into the AI Mode experiment will begin to see ‘highly-tailored results.’ This personalization is achieved by leveraging a ‘whole slew of personal data,’ including previous AI conversations, search history, and links selected in Search or Maps. For instance, AI Mode can infer preferences for specific food types, seating arrangements (indoor or outdoor), or even account for time constraints like needing a ‘quick meal’ within an hour.
While the broader AI Mode itself now extensively incorporates personal context, it’s important to note a current limitation: the specialized agent, particularly for restaurant bookings, does not yet take personal context into account during the actual booking stage.
In addition to the agentic features, Google has significantly expanded the availability of AI Mode, rolling it out to 180 countries and territories globally. However, the feature currently remains English-only.
Amidst these advancements, a cautionary note has emerged. Recent reports from ZDNET highlight that scammers are actively exploiting AI Overviews and AI Mode to trick users into calling fraudulent customer service numbers. Victims have reported providing payment information to these fake numbers, leading to financial loss. Experts advise users to exercise caution, avoid blindly trusting contact information provided by AI, and instead verify details through traditional search methods or by directly visiting company websites.
