TLDR: Google is rolling out its enhanced AI Mode to over 180 countries, introducing ‘agentic capabilities’ that enable the AI to perform real-world tasks directly from search results. Initially, this includes streamlining restaurant reservations, with plans to expand to local service bookings and event ticketing. The update also brings personalized recommendations and collaborative sharing features, transforming Google Search into a more proactive ‘answer and agent engine.’
Google has announced a significant global expansion of its AI Mode, an experimental feature within Search, now available in over 180 countries and territories for English-speaking users. This rollout introduces advanced ‘agentic capabilities,’ marking a pivotal shift in how users interact with Google Search, moving beyond simply providing information to actively assisting in completing real-world tasks.
The core of this update lies in the AI’s newfound ability to act on behalf of the user. Starting immediately, AI Mode can manage complex tasks such as making restaurant reservations. Users can specify various constraints and preferences, including party size, date, time, location, and preferred cuisine. The AI then leverages its understanding to search across multiple reservation platforms like OpenTable, Resy, and Tock, presenting curated options and providing direct links to finalize bookings. Robby Stein, VP of Product at Google Search, elaborated on this, stating, “For example, you can now ask about getting a dinner reservation with friends that includes multiple constraints and preferences — like party size, date, time, location and preferred cuisine — and AI Mode will streamline this process.” Future expansions of these agentic capabilities are planned to include local service appointments, such as salon bookings or repair services, and purchasing event tickets.
Underpinning these advanced functionalities is Project Mariner, Google’s experimental web-browsing AI agent. This technology allows AI Mode to autonomously navigate websites, understand on-screen information, fill out forms, and interact with web elements much like a human user would.
Beyond task automation, the updated AI Mode also enhances user experience through personalized recommendations and collaborative features. For AI Ultra subscribers in the U.S. participating in the AI Mode Labs experiment, the system now offers tailored suggestions based on their past conversations, search history, and activity in Google Search and Maps. This personalization, initially focused on dining-related queries, allows the AI to anticipate user preferences, such as cuisine type or seating choices. Users retain full control over their data and can adjust personalization settings at any time.
Collaboration is also made easier with a new link-sharing feature. Users can generate a link to their AI-generated responses and share it with friends or family. Recipients can then jump into the conversation, ask follow-up questions, and continue exploring independently, facilitating group planning for trips or events. Senders maintain control and can delete these shared links at any time.

Google’s AI Mode operates using a ‘query fan-out’ technique, concurrently issuing multiple related searches across various subtopics and data sources. It synthesizes this real-time information, including facts from the Google Knowledge Graph, real-world data, and the Google Shopping Graph, to provide comprehensive and actionable responses. The system also supports multimodal searching, allowing users to interact using text, voice, or images. This strategic move by Google aims to transform Search into a more versatile and proactive assistant, enhancing daily productivity and convenience for users worldwide.
