Google Enhances NotebookLM with Advanced Generative AI Features, Including Video Overviews

TLDR: Google has rolled out significant updates to its AI-powered research tool, NotebookLM, introducing new generative AI features such as ‘Video Overviews’ and an upgraded ‘Studio’ panel. These enhancements aim to provide users with more dynamic and versatile ways to interact with their research materials.

Google’s AI-powered research and content creation tool, NotebookLM, has received a substantial upgrade with the introduction of new generative AI capabilities, prominently featuring ‘Video Overviews’ and an enhanced ‘Studio’ panel. These updates, which began rolling out around July 29-31, 2025, are designed to transform how users interact with complex information and generate content.

The most notable addition is the ‘Video Overviews’ feature, which allows users to create visual summaries of information stored in their notebooks. Building upon the existing ‘Audio Overviews,’ these video summaries utilize narrated slides and illustrations to break down complex material, making it more accessible and easier to understand. Users can select specific topics, define learning goals, and tailor the videos to different audiences. Currently, this feature is available only in English, with Google hinting at support for more languages in the near future.

Accompanying the video overviews are significant upgrades to the ‘Studio’ panel within NotebookLM. This redesigned panel now offers a more organized layout with clear tiles for various generative outputs, including Audio Overview, Video Overview, Mind Map, and Reports. Users can now generate multiple audio overviews within a single notebook, allowing for different language versions or focused summaries of specific subsections of their source material. The enhanced Studio also supports multitasking, enabling users to listen to an AI overview while simultaneously reviewing on-screen content.

Beyond the new overview capabilities, NotebookLM continues to function as a custom AI assistant grounded in user data, supporting multimodal content such as PDFs, videos, audio, code, text, and images. The tool also offers features like generating briefing documents, study guides, and FAQs, along with improved sharing and collaboration options, and analytics to track notebook usage.
