Google has announced a substantial investment of €5.5 billion (approximately $6.4 billion) in Germany over the next four years, from 2026 to 2029. This strategic move aims to significantly enhance the country’s enterprise cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, while also prioritizing sustainability, workforce skills development, and energy efficiency.
The investment plan includes the establishment of a new data center in Dietzenbach and the expansion of an existing site in Hanau. These facilities are designed to strengthen Germany’s role within Google’s extensive 42-region cloud network. The expanded infrastructure will be crucial for supporting advanced AI tools such as Vertex AI and Gemini, which are already being utilized by major companies like Mercedes-Benz and Koenig & Bauer for their AI projects.
For businesses operating in Germany, this expansion is expected to translate into several key benefits, including faster performance, more reliable access to cloud services, and stronger alignment with evolving EU data regulations. The introduction of sovereign cloud options will also provide organizations with greater control over data storage locations and management, reducing dependence on a single provider and supporting hybrid or multi-cloud strategies.
A significant component of Google’s investment is its commitment to sustainability. The company is extending its 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy agreement with Engie through 2030. This partnership integrates various renewable energy sources, including wind, solar, hydro, and battery storage, to ensure a cleaner and more stable energy supply across Germany’s grid. Google projects that approximately 85 percent of its German operations will run on carbon-free energy by 2026.
Furthermore, Google is collaborating with Energieversorgung Offenbach (EVO) to implement a heat reuse initiative. Waste heat generated from the new Dietzenbach data center will be repurposed to warm over 2,000 local homes, showcasing a practical application of digital infrastructure contributing to a wider clean-energy system.
