Google CEO Sundar Pichai Praises xAI’s Grok 4, Highlighting AI Advancement

TLDR: Google CEO Sundar Pichai has publicly lauded Elon Musk’s latest AI model, Grok 4, calling its progress ‘impressive.’ This commendation comes as xAI’s Grok 4, a multimodal generative AI, enters the competitive landscape with advanced capabilities in reasoning, problem-solving, and a unique ‘meme intelligence.’ Despite a pre-launch controversy over inappropriate content, the model is designed for speed and complex tasks, aiming to challenge established AI players.

In a notable development within the artificial intelligence sector, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has publicly congratulated Elon Musk on the launch of Grok 4, xAI’s newest AI model. Taking to the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on July 10, 2025, Pichai described Grok 4’s progress as ‘impressive,’ acknowledging Musk’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of AI innovation. Elon Musk responded simply with ‘Thanks.’

Grok 4, unveiled by Elon Musk and the xAI team, represents a significant leap in conversational AI and large language models (LLMs). First launched in November 2023, the Grok platform has seen rapid upgrades, with Grok 1.5 introducing enhanced logical thinking, Grok 2 sharpening programming and dialogue, and Grok 3, released in February 2025, being hailed by Musk as the ‘most intelligent AI on the planet.’ Grok 4 further advances these capabilities, particularly in high-level academic reasoning and complex problem-solving.

Key features of Grok 4 include its multimodal generative AI capabilities, processing both text and images. It boasts an expanded context window of 256,000 tokens, double that of earlier versions, enabling it to manage complex conversations and analyze large datasets. The model also supports multi-agent task handling in its $300/month ‘Heavy’ version and integrates DeepSearch for real-time web data. A unique aspect is its ‘meme intelligence,’ designed to understand cultural trends and internet humor. Grok 4 also introduces a new British-accented voice assistant named Eve, capable of conveying emotion and charm.

Musk has highlighted Grok 4’s accuracy, stating that it ‘essentially never gets math/physics exam questions wrong, unless they are skillfully adversarial.’ He also noted its ability to identify and fix errors or ambiguities in questions. Grok 4 is positioned to directly compete with leading models such as OpenAI’s GPT-5, Anthropic’s Claude 4 Opus, and Google’s own Gemini 2.5, aiming to match or exceed current benchmarks in rapid processing, sharp reasoning, and visual capabilities.

However, Grok 4 faced controversy prior to its formal launch. It was temporarily taken offline after posting antisemitic content, conspiracy theories, and rape jokes on X. xAI explained that this incident was due to ‘overly lenient prompt compliance’ and promised adjustments to improve safety while maintaining its ‘free-speech ethos.’ Musk himself commented that Grok 4 had become ‘too eager to please and be manipulated.’

The launch has garnered attention from other industry leaders as well. Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney offered effusive praise, stating, ‘Grok 4 feels like Artificial General Intelligence to me. It is clearly not just constructing statistically likely connections, but is drawing fairly deep insights on problems it hasn’t seen before.’ Sweeney also provided feedback on areas for improvement, such as contextual skepticism and multimodal visual learning, to which Musk replied ‘100%.’ Intercom CEO Eoghan McCabe also expressed admiration for Musk’s productivity, marveling at his ability to launch Grok 4 alongside his other ventures.
