TLDR: Google and Reliance Jio have announced a landmark partnership to provide 18 months of free access to Google’s Gemini AI Pro plan for over 500 million Jio users across India. This initiative, valued at approximately ₹35,100 per user, aims to democratize AI access in the country, starting with young 5G users and expanding nationwide. The collaboration also extends to enterprise AI solutions, positioning India as a key player in the global AI race.
In a significant move set to reshape India’s digital landscape, global tech giant Google and Indian telecom powerhouse Reliance Jio have forged a strategic partnership to offer 18 months of complimentary access to Google’s advanced Gemini AI Pro plan to more than 500 million Jio users. The announcement, made around October 30-31, 2025, underscores a concerted effort to accelerate AI adoption and empower a vast user base in the world’s second-largest internet market.
The free AI Pro plan, estimated to be worth ₹35,100 (approximately $396) per user, includes access to the powerful Gemini 2.5 Pro model, expanded tools like Google’s NotebookLM for study and research, and innovative image and video generators such as Nano Banana and Veo 3.1. Additionally, users will benefit from 2 terabytes of cloud storage, providing a comprehensive suite of AI-powered capabilities.
The rollout of this ambitious initiative will be staggered. Initially, early access will be granted to Jio users aged 18 to 25 who are on unlimited 5G plans. The service will then progressively extend to include every eligible Jio user nationwide over the coming months, with Reliance aiming for the shortest possible expansion timeline.
This collaboration is facilitated through Reliance Intelligence, a newly established subsidiary of Reliance Industries, which is also a joint venture with Meta. Google CEO Sundar Pichai expressed his enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, ‘I’m excited for how this partnership will help expand access to AI across India.’ Echoing this sentiment, Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani hailed the move as a crucial ‘step toward making the country AI-empowered.’
The partnership extends beyond consumer offerings. Reliance Intelligence will also collaborate with Google Cloud to broaden access to advanced AI hardware accelerators, specifically Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), enabling Indian organizations to train and deploy large-scale AI models domestically. Furthermore, Reliance Intelligence will serve as a strategic go-to-market partner for Google Cloud’s Gemini Enterprise, an AI platform designed for businesses to build and run intelligent agents for daily operations.
