TLDR: Google and PayPal have announced a multi-year strategic partnership aimed at integrating AI-powered solutions across their platforms to revolutionize digital payments and enhance online shopping experiences through ‘agentic commerce’. This collaboration will see PayPal’s payment solutions embedded deeply within Google’s ecosystem, while PayPal leverages Google’s advanced AI to bolster its services and security.
Google and PayPal officially unveiled a multi-year strategic partnership on September 18, 2025, designed to bring advanced AI-powered shopping and payment experiences to users across their respective platforms. This significant collaboration is set to redefine digital commerce, with a strong emphasis on what both companies refer to as ‘agentic commerce’ – automated systems that conduct transactions on behalf of users.
Under the terms of the agreement, PayPal’s comprehensive suite of payment solutions, including PayPal-branded checkout, Hyperwallet, and Payouts, will be deeply integrated into a wide array of Google products. Furthermore, PayPal Enterprise Payments is positioned to become a key payment provider, processing card payments across major Google services such as Google Cloud, Google Play, and Google Ads. This move is expected to create a more seamless and secure payment experience for billions of Google users.
A core component of this partnership is the strategic application of artificial intelligence. PayPal will leverage Google’s industry-leading AI capabilities to enhance its services, improve security measures, and drive innovation in its offerings. Concurrently, both companies will jointly develop new AI shopping experiences and establish industry protocols for agentic commerce. Google is actively expanding its role in this domain, with AI agents designed to assist shoppers in finding, comparing, and ultimately purchasing products online. The collaboration also includes backing the adoption of Google’s Agent Payments Protocol, a secure and scalable framework specifically designed for agentic commerce.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google parent Alphabet, emphasized the mutual benefits of the alliance, stating, “Through this partnership, PayPal will use our industry-leading AI to enhance services and security, and we will more deeply integrate PayPal’s innovative payment capabilities for a better experience across Google products and platforms.” Alex Chriss, President and CEO of PayPal, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the evolving landscape of online retail: “In this emerging world of agentic commerce, trust and innovation are key. Together with Google, we are leading the way for digital commerce, ensuring greater opportunities for merchants and users worldwide.”
The partnership comes as PayPal seeks to strengthen its position amidst intensifying competition from other fintech companies and tech giants like Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Stripe. For PayPal, the deal offers expanded distribution across Google’s vast user base and access to cutting-edge AI capabilities for product development and service improvement. Google, in turn, aims to defend its advertising revenue, capture more commerce-related search activity, and compete effectively against emerging ‘super apps’ that integrate messaging, commerce, and financial services.

Following the announcement, PayPal’s shares saw a positive reaction, ticking up over 3% in late afternoon trading. While Morgan Stanley analysts viewed the partnership as a ‘step in the right direction’ for PayPal, they noted it might be ‘unlikely to meaningfully move the needle near-term.’ This collaboration follows PayPal’s earlier partnership with AI startup Perplexity, which provides users with early access to its AI-powered Comet browser and a 12-month trial of its Pro subscription, further underscoring PayPal’s commitment to integrating AI into its ecosystem.
